Someone brought to our attention this morning the existence of JewTube, which is exactly what you think it is. The emphasis seems to be heavily weighted toward the Orthodox end of things, so you wouldn’t think you’d find much in the way of music. However, a search for “music” brought up, among other things, a list of phrases to click on. I went for “hip-hop.” And how. Enjoy the site’s sole rap effort to date, about which none more needs be said than the title of this entry. Oh yeah, and another thing: Oy. [JewTube]

Jewish music is where Christian Contemporary Music was a decade ago: almost quaint in its anachronistic corniness. You know how so many Christian bands sound about five years out of date? The typical “Jewish music” track sounds beamed in from 1981: Jim Steinman-esque flourishes, cheesy keyboards, gratituous guitar solos, all usually brought to you in the key of D minor. Jewish rap (as practiced by “50 Shekel” and “Etan G”) makes Brian Austin Green sound like Rakim.
Someday I want to do a book on the intersection of traditional Judaism with pop culture. Maybe call it “Performing Mitzvot Saved My Life” or “Pesach Ready.”
