Marvin Sapp Reminds Me To Pay More Attention To Gospel Music

I’ve spent a lot of time following Christian rock lately–yes, even more than usual. While it can often be an excruciating enterprise (feel free to look up the band Falling Up, if you care to share my pain), it also makes me occasionally forget about the more soulful end of the Christian-music spectrum. While I wasn’t looking, Marvin Sapp, already a significant gospel star, managed to break a chart record for the most weeks at No. 1 on any chart with his 42nd week topping the gospel charts with “Never Would Have Made It,” a song that’s also sitting atop the urban adult contemporary chart. I suppose your enthusiasm for the track will be directly proportionate to how well you tolerate enthusiasm for Jesus, but ten months atop any Billboard singles chart is a significant achievement.
