@Maura Johnston: 311, Sublime, and even Sugar Ray produced several quality albums before headlining Warped or becoming famous. Their music seems a bit more interesting from a musical and technical standpoint compared to the music comprising today's warped tour.

@puhctek: We're going to have to agree to disagree on this point, as I find all of those bands pretty much repugnant. Especially Sublime, whose canonization I think is only chalked up to the fact that the lead singer is metaphysically hanging out with Shannon Hoon at present.

Thanks Maura!

I think I just might be excited for the All Girl Japanese Ska Band.

Oh, neighborhood gossip. The Detroit Cobras played a neighborhood bar's street party on Saturday... (just 2 blocks from my house).... Meg White was sitting in with them. She was having a good time. The kid was thrilled to meet her. To a fourteen year old girl guitarist, she's inspirational. Yup. Stay Positive. Meg was totally schnockered though. Poor lady will be feeling that one....

@2ironic4u: I suppose it's an argument for ageism, but In the cases of three of those five bands that you mentioned, it can be argued that their quality wasn't derived from their being listener friendly, but that they were actually quality musicians.

I hope Katy Perry had her autotune handy, because she sounded terrible on So You Think You Can Dance and I suspect she can't actually, you know, SING.

@puhctek: I think that's just another case of "things were better in my day, maaaaaaaan." Sure, the Warped Tour had less sponsors back in the day, but one could hardly argue that its headliners weren't at least somewhat listener-friendly (Goldfinger, Sugar Ray, 311, Sublime, Deftones, etc.)

Also, regardless of any sponsorship, they still offer the best price for the most bands. $45 for an all-you-can-eat emo/MySpace-core buffet is a pretty good deal for most kids.

I remember the first time the warped tour came around my time way way back, and was populated by bands who had seemed to not follow the mainstream fad or trend, as it was less commercialized, less homogeneous, and less tepid. Is it just me, or is the warped tour marketed as an "underground" festival event but rather is just another marketing scheme to scrounge up some money? The tour seems to have wavered from its roots, but I suppose that's the status quo these days.

Wow, the Warped demographic has really changed if Katie Perry is considered suitable headliner material. What happened to bands in the vein of Korn or any of the dozens of silly bands who wore horror masks on stage and played 'scary' music?

I thoroughly enjoyed Ludo as well, though I don't really see the Placebo vocal comparison.

Also, was it just me or were the crowds pretty thin? I remember when they had this at Randalls Island back in the day (meaning '05 and before) and it was always jam-packed. But then again, maybe Warped and the mainstream have less crossover these days.
