brooklynagain.jpgIn what I have to applaud as a savvy way to maximize pageviews from bored Internet rubberneckers, Brooklyn Vegan has put up another post full of pictures from Sunday’s inexplicably packed MGMT/Ting Tings show at McCarren Pool. Will the comments on that thread (currently at 64 and counting!) reach the nameless-asshole heights seen yesterday? Well, so far, the best one is “I was getting head at the time.” C’mon, guys, you can do better! I have faith! [Brooklyn Vegan / Pic via Suburban Cowboy]

Marine sergeant not guilty in hazing case
A military jury on Thursday found a Marine sergeant not guilty after authorities charged him with hazing a lance corporal who later committed suicide in Afghanistan. The general court martial panel of three officers and five enlisted Marines deliberated about an hour before announcing their verdict ...
Scientists say NASA cutting missions to Mars
Scientists say NASA is about to propose major cuts in its exploration of other planets, especially Mars. And NASA's former science chief is calling it irrational. With limited money for science and an over-budget new space telescope, the space agency essentially had to make a choice in where it ...

idolator could only dream of getting so many comments

  2. Maura Johnston  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

Of that “caliber”? Not so much.

  3. Cheap Shot  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

    @brownham: exactly.

  4. Maura Johnston  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

well, i appreciate you both helping me toward my unrealized-by-my-conscious-mind goal. gosh, i’m so lucky.

  5. Cheap Shot  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

look, I know it’s not fair to compare but the only time I see more than two comments here is when it’s some ‘insidery’ music post with comments by people in the music business. I’m not sure what the right thing to do would be to generate some more commenter discourse.

  6. Ned Raggett  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

@Cheap Shot: I think you might be making some incorrect assumptions there.

  7. Audif Jackson Winters III  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

Only when Idolator gets a slot on Sirius Left of Center “Blog Radio” will hipster grab-asses feel comfortable making their presence known around here.

  8. Dan Gibson  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

@Cheap Shot: The Rock the Bells recap with 11 comments (as of this post) today is quite ‘insidery’, sure.

  9. The Illiterate  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

@Cheap Shot: You might start by making intelligent comments about the post itself instead of taking cheap shots about the number of comments. Maybe you have something intelligent to say about the way Brooklyn Vegan seems to be pandering to its audience (”Search for yourself in one of our 200 pictures of the MGMT show! Look! There you are! Now text all your friends about it!”). But judging by your alias, I guess we’ll never know.

  10. Cheap Shot  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

@Ned Raggett: Ned your like one of the few people I see here. The reason why I’m dumbfounded is because this is a blog about MUSIC. something so subjective should get more attention, no?

  11. Cheap Shot  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

@The Illiterate: Hey I’m not defending Brooklyn Vegan, but it doesn’t pander to anyone. The doors are wide open for comments unlike here which is a good thing. I mean no harm, I’m just wondering why people don’t make themselves known around these here parts is all.

Oh and it’s not about quantity of comments, the quality is important and I do see quality comments here, I would just like to see more.

    Just saying.

  13. Lucas Jensen  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

@Big Gray.: Wow…that barely works, but it does. And I’m not saying Alexa is perfect, but it’s one measure.

  14. Maura Johnston  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

@Cheap Shot: Look. I know you have your personal issues with me, as evidenced by the “death to Idolator dance” that you were performing back in April. But if you’re trying to start a smear campaign so you can… I don’t even know, I guess reprise your little boogie-down… at least get your facts right, OK? Starting with the multiple counterexamples to your sighing about our comments ON OUR FRONT PAGE. And I’m not even going to get into your “pandering” comments.

Christ, I shouldn’t even bother, but I hate to see people try so hard at something … only to start off with a misstep.

  15. Cheap Shot  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

@Big Gray.: Hey! not bad. I dig that Alexa for sure. thanks.

  16. Cheap Shot  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

@Maura Johnston: Laura you’re a bit testy today. Why is this? why can’t we all just get along?

  17. Cheap Shot  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

@Maura Johnston: BTW, I love you too.

  18. Rob Murphy  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

I don’t comment much because I usually have nothing smart or funny enough to say.

  19. Anonymous  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

The list exercise drew tons of response.

Also, if maybe next time we could get The Doors to play with MGMT and the Ting Tings, that might do the trick.

  20. SomeSound-MostlyFury  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

@Cheap Shot: I think many people who read this blog subscribe to the “If you don’t have anything worth saying, don’t say anything,” mantra. And that’s why I keep coming back here day after day. Because the readers, for the most part, exercise intelligent discretion. And it makes for better comments.

  21. Ned Raggett  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

@Cheap Shot: Laura you’re a bit testy today.

I’ve heard of this Laura. Perhaps you are on the wrong blog.

    @Maura Johnston:

I just wanted to scan down, step in and say that I am not a music insider. I am just a HUGE music fan that is extremely happy that there are forums that exist like this one where I can wax poetic if you will, get feedback, and engage in entertaining conversations. [Learning shit and/or copping new music is just icing on the cake.] Thank you Idolator. And keep up the good work.

  23. Bazooka Tooth  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

I think they do a good job around here, even if there is a LOT too much coverage of crappy teen R&B top 40 throwaway stuff (i.e. neyo, chris brown, etc.).

  24. janine  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

I’d rather have two pieces of high quality chocolate than a 10 lb bag of Tootsie Rolls. I’d love to see more page hits and comments so Maura can make more money, but if it means the threads turning into BV, I leave.

  25. Cheap Shot  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

    More than 6 comments here.

    Mission accomplished.

    over and out.

  26. DavidWatts  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

It’s tempting when writing about music on the web to just go “BLARG THERE IS MORE MUSIC LISTEN,” and Idolator nobly resists this urge every day. Kudos all around.

  27. jposnan  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

@Rob Murphy: Me too. And as an amateur, I’m a little intimidated by folks like Ned Raggett and Maura, who seem to know what they’re talking about.

  28. Cheap Shot  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

“Christ, I shouldn’t even bother, but I hate to see people try so hard at something … only to start off with a misstep. “

That’s exactly how I feel about Idolator. Good night Maura.

  29. Hyman Decent  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

…Brooklyn Vegan has put up another post full of pictures from Sunday’s…

The first post had just one or two photos and its purpose was to report that the event was extremely crowded. Just sayin’.

  30. Maura Johnston  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

@Cheap Shot: And yet, you keep coming back. (To make belated “comebacks,” at that.) I guess you’re being forced to?

  31. NeverEnough  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

@Ned Raggett: But you’re (oh, sorry… “your”) an insider! I’m not listening to you, Ned. *puts fingers in ears* LA LA LA LA LA LA.

    Christ.

  32. NeverEnough  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

@Maura Johnston: I love this site and your hard work is appreciated. Some days, this site and Gawker are the only two things that keep me sane during the work day.

  33. How do I say this ... THROWDINI!  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2008

@Tauwan: I am not a music insider. I am just a HUGE music fan that is extremely happy that there are forums that exist like this one where I can wax poetic if you will, get feedback, and engage in entertaining conversations.

This is pretty much echoes my thoughts on idolator. Just looking for a short break in my day where I can see what people are talking about/listening to without having to scan through inane comments like those in the linked blog.

  34. Who is justin bieber’s dentist? I have been wondering. The beaver have some nice teeth.
