Nas Swings On The Flippety-Flop

nassssssssssss.gifI thought I was going to get whiplash reading this Nas Q&A in The Onion A.V. Club, in which the bulk of Nathan Rabin’s queries get this sort of response: “AVC: Were you happy with how The Firm turned out? Nas: Yeah, no. I’m happy that it even happened, but there was another direction it could have gone in, if everybody had just got it done.” Yeah, no–welcome to the new Nas, as cagey with interviewers as ever. The albums, of course, are another thing altogether, as Rich Juzwiak’s close reading indicates. [A.V. Club]

Miley Cyrus outstrips Nas, the hip hop prophet, griot, whatever you wanna call him, in first day sales. Different genres, different base, but it sends a loud message about his stans. He gets these results in spite of the irreverent title, leaks, etc. Tighten up your game, dude.

Hey Cosmiclove, methinks you’re the one that needs to “tighten up your game.” Of course Miley Cyrus outsells Nas–have your forgotten that we live in America, where a dubious Disney pop ‘princess’ from the South that likes to act out pretty much outsells everything?

Except for Lil Wayne of course, but America loves nothing more than a whacked-out black performer on a path of self-destruction.

Nas is a genuine career artist that has gone through all sorts of dramatic trials and tribulations publicly. Much like, say, Bob Dylan and Neil Young (both artists that have released stuff as “bad” as anything y’all haters claim Nas has in his catalog).

In 2008, Nas has released one of the most poignant and (to “black” America, anyway) important albums of the year.

Underneath of the hype and hyperbole exists a thoughtful (and thought-provoking) dissertation on the word “n*gger”, still one of the most powerful in the English language.

But hey, you’d rather hear the Clipse prattle on about dealing coke out of grandma’s kitchen, right?

One more thing: SALES NUMBERS DO NOT EQUAL QUALITY PRODUCT

Remember that the next time you make some snarky comment about McDonald’s…
