ARTIST: David Archuleta
TITLE: "Crush"
DEBUT: Aug. 1, 2008
ONE-LISTEN VERDICT: I finally "got" David Archuleta when he performed "Apologize" with OneRepublic on the American Idol finale. Not that I'm a big fan of that song, but its breathy, wistful feel allowed the timbre of Archie's voice to shine through a lot better than any of the big quasi-inspirational tracks his father saddled him with during the initial weeks of the competition. Whoever is putting together his debut album must feel the same way, as "Crush" is a laid-back, dreamy ballad in the vein of "Apologize" and "Tattoo." Archie even slips in some falsetto, as if to further make his combined fanbase of 12-year-olds and their mothers swoon in unison.
WHERE TO HEAR IT: Z100's site. Inexplicably, Jive is waiting until Sept. 2 to make the song available commercially, perhaps because it wants everyone to illegally download radio rips of the track and be OK with that. Oh, major labels, will you ever learn?

Meh. Not bad, but I still don't like his style.
I can't really see this being a big hit. I think your "Tattoo" comparison is apt for that reason as well as for their sonic similarities.
I haven't bothered to listen to the accompanying "interview", but the one question I'd like to ask is, why didn't he (or the puppet masters who pull his strings) premier this on Ryan Seacrest's show? Could it possibly be that Jeff Archuleta is so pissed his kid didn't win he's boycotting Idol and everything associated with it? After the tour ends, will David A. "Kelly-and-Carrie" the show for a while?
inquiring minds want to know...
But what inquiring minds really want to know is whether or not this song is as good, fun, and breezy as Amerie's song of the same name?
@Tauwan: Can't "find" Amerie's "Crush" right now, but I can say:
"Crush" (Mandy Moore) > "Crush" (David Archuleta)
[personal preferences, of course]
But none of them are as good as this:

@Rob Murphy:
Little known fact: Mandy Moore's self titled disc from 2001 is kind of a favorite around these parts:

Just saying.
And yes Maura I'm with you on that Jennifer Paige tip. Though the Amerie track is just so damn infectious and breezy.
Rob, there's no need to be nasty here. It's a great song, with mad vocals, and anyone who hasn't ever had a crush in their life ever before may not understand and appreciate this song. I'm not insinuating anything here. Am just saying. To each his own. But do acquire some class will you?
@Maura Johnston: IAWTC.
@Tauwan: Thanks for the link, and a great write-up. Indeed, that record did not get the respect it deserved.
Also great: "In My Pocket".
Archie hit it outta the park!!!!! Believe me when I say there were tons of us Archies up all night (and still up) - chatrooms blazing across the US , from Guam, Singapore, Japan, Canada, the Phillipines, India in nervous anticipation of this debut - and we all feel Jive has done our "Crown Prince" proud…. this is the beauty of him being 17 years old - the tiger is yet to be fully unleashed, and this debut goes a LONG way in silencing the critics and detractors who wrote him of as being unable to appeal to a "mainstream" pop audience…. BRAVO DAVID….
@KathyPera: Ouch!
Sorry, just saw this.
I can't hate on a young performer, still developing into what/however music history will remember.
Just saying -- wasn't much of a fan during the last season of AI. Not much of a fan of this song.
But, obligatorially, good luck David!
Meh, pretty forgettable, IMO.
But then again, I'm not 12.
At least they released something from him. I wonder what David Cook did to get the Hicks treatment?
My whole family, including my husband and 3 kids 17, 20, 22 and his 21 year old wife LOVE David and "Crush". I know people keep repeating the myth that David's fans are 12 year old girls and their mothers, but it is just not true. Someday everyone will figure it out.
FINALLY... a song suitable to bump in my whip this summer.
I'm serious, on every level. Well, almost every level.
From Mr. Murphy: I haven't bothered to listen to the accompanying "interview", but the one question I'd like to ask is, why didn't he (or the puppet masters who pull his strings) premier this on Ryan Seacrest's show? "Kelly-and-Carrie" the show for a while? inquiring minds want to know... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------- FROM ME: Why not on Seacrest's show? 1. Simply because they were in NY doing the AI Tour. That easily blows your boycott theory 2. From a marketing standpoint, since Z100 reaches 2.6M listeners weekly, making it the most listened station in America - Jive's choice where to premier Archuleta's maiden single is again simply, common sense Sure hope inquiring mind of Bob Murphy summon some common sense before mouthing nonsense. Quit the puppet string-Daddy dearest scenario - everyone in American knows by now that all of that is just crap. Jackryan4DA
