Pop Montreal Goes For The Grand Gestures

The Pop Montreal festival, slated for Oct. 1-5, definitely has one of the more mishmashy bills I’ve seen from a multi-day, multi-act event this year, with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Burt Bacharach, Hot Chip, Wire, Silver Apples, Julie Doiron, the Wedding Present, and Headlights among the many, many acts that are confirmed so far. (Please somebody get Bacharach and Cave together for something, anything. Full lineup after the jump.

POP Montreal , sort of like the CMJ of Montreal, but less industry ...
Of Montreal’s psychedelic pop pushes listener
Of Montreal, the brainchild of Ohio native Kevin Barnes, has forged major artistic ground on its eleventh album, Paralytic Stalks, departing from the pop song format, funk influence and erotic content that has become synonymous with the band.
CD reviews: Of Montreal, Paul McCartney and more
The rubbery funk that made recent Of Montreal albums such a hoot is mostly gone, too, replaced by chilly prog, secondhand Brazilian pop of the weirdest kind, musique concrète and bizarre stabs at Space Age chamber music. So the shocking thing ...

it’s a sad day when Black Kids have a higher billing than Silver Apples

well pop montreal plays a ton of different venues throughout the city over the course of that weekend, and each show has its own, less schizophrenic lineup. two of last year’s big names were the national and bun b though, so it’s a kind of ridiculous thing. also this lineup will getting bigger and more amazing as time draws closer, so keep your eyes peeled and come up to montreal and document it. or give me a press pass and i’ll cover it for you :D

Seriously, I would just about DIE to see Bacharach and Cave together. OMFG. (Esp. if you get Irma Thomas in there, too.)

    Sidebar: Cex? Is still? Around?

I’ve always thought of Pop as “that annoying thing people drag me to in the fall because we live in Montreal and it’s supposed to be important.” And Hot Chip at #3? *cringe*
