Excellent post! I've been a chart geek for almost thirty years now, and you summed up my thoughts perfectly. The first copy of Billboard that I purchased was May 10, 1980. And thanks to Ebay, I now own a copy of the August 1958 Billboard that includes the first Hot 100.

But I do feel that the pre-Soundscan/pre-BDS Hot 100 suffers from one serious flaw: it mostly reflected sales and airplay in the "pop" marketplace. R&B and Country radio stations were excluded, along with many record retailers that specialized in those genres. From the point of view of the music industry this made perfect sense, given the segregated nature of the industry. But for most of it's history, I'd say that the Hot 100 has not been an accurate reflection of the most popular songs in the nation. It might be better to consider it a reflection of the most popular songs in "mainstream" America.

By the way, Radio & Records isn't defunct yet. Perhaps you meant to say Record World?
