Excellent post! I've been a chart geek for almost thirty years now, and you summed up my thoughts perfectly. The first copy of Billboard that I purchased was May 10, 1980. And thanks to Ebay, I now own a copy of the August 1958 Billboard that includes the first Hot 100.

But I do feel that the pre-Soundscan/pre-BDS Hot 100 suffers from one serious flaw: it mostly reflected sales and airplay in the "pop" marketplace. R&B and Country radio stations were excluded, along with many record retailers that specialized in those genres. From the point of view of the music industry this made perfect sense, given the segregated nature of the industry. But for most of it's history, I'd say that the Hot 100 has not been an accurate reflection of the most popular songs in the nation. It might be better to consider it a reflection of the most popular songs in "mainstream" America.

By the way, Radio & Records isn't defunct yet. Perhaps you meant to say Record World?

@Ned Raggett: Me three. In fact, I used to have cassettes around of the year end top 100 countdowns. Man, I wonder what happened to those?

Also, "End of the Road" isn't schlock, though DJing at that time meant you were gonna have to play that anywhere there was a senior class about to graduate.

Are you still tuning into American Top 40: The 80's these days? Many 80's music radio stations forget about half of the music in these countdowns.

Coincidentally, since you were interested in it during '84, this weekend's broadcast is from August 4, 1984.

And the showtimes for your favorite stations:
[radio.nenad.net]

I remember being very disappointed when my station switched from 'AT40' after Kasem left and went to 'Casey's Top 40.' I didn't consider any non-Billboard chart worth bothering with.

@Chris N.: Did THAT as well. On graph paper and everything. I remember that for a while I could only hear the first two hours precisely because we had to go to church after that point. Very frustrating (but I usually was able to catch the top five).
