Depeche Mode To Warner Music Group: “Enjoy Our Silence”

August 1st, 2008 // 11 Comments

Hits is reporting that Depeche Mode has severed ties with Warner Music Group because they felt “underserved” by the company’s current regime; they join Madonna and Nickelback as acts who have fled from Warner’s pastures over recent months. All of Depeche Mode’s U.S. releases dating back to their debut, 1981′s Speak & Spell, had come out on the Warner subsidiary Sire; outside of the States, their music is handled by the EMI-administered label Mute, a situation that doesn’t look like it’s going to change anytime soon. No word on what their plans are for their next album or tour. [Hits / YouTube]

    Am I the only one who thinks that Martin Gore looks like an older, far hotter Spencer Pratt?

  2. Ned Raggett

    @NeverEnough: A vision.

    Not too surprising in the end. Depeche are practically a self-contained machine at this point, and regardless of who releases their next album it’ll probably be on the same level of Playing the Angel‘s success — built-in fanbase sales, idly curiosity beyond that, and some massive tours that generate all the income they’d ever need and then some.

  3. How do I say this ... THROWDINI!

    Woo hoo! Two Depeche Mode articles in one week. Now we’re talking.

    @NeverEnough: The realization that I could not pick Spencer Pratt out of a line up makes me unbelievably happy. The fact that I know who he is, less so.

    @Ned Raggett: Yep. For acts as established and settled as DM, I can’t see how the label makes much difference. They’ve probably been with the label longer than any of the execs, so its not like anyone there would have much of an emotional/personal investment in the band, leading to the “service” they’re apparently looking for.

    What this might do is — maybe — prompt the long overdue physical release of the final round of single box sets, which have only been available via the massive iTunes package. There’s plenty of reasons why they won’t do this these days, but it could yet happen. As it stands the final album via Warners was a (completely unneeded) greatest hits anyway, but hey, if it broke the contract…

    DM to Warners: You treat me like a dog, get me down on my knees.
    Let’s play…Master and Servant!

    (It’s a lot, it’s a lot, it’s a lot, it’s a lot, it’s a lot, it’s a lot, it’s a lot, LIKE LIFE!)

    The grabbing hands and all that.

    Some great reward.

    DM’s opinion of Warners: Useless.

    Also, can I just go on record as saying the intro to “Enjoy The Silence” is probably one of the best video intros OF ALL TIMEZ? Something about that little flash just gets me.

    Interesting. I thought the troika was making these decisions when it was a party of one…Tommy, I like the way you move.
