Hicksville is hardly the only New York City suburb riding out the dog days of summer with free concerts featuring "big" names: Stamford, Conn., uses its satellite city's economic base to handily outdo the Long Island town's Spin Doctors show with a free Boyz II Men concert this Thursday. (Now if only 1994-era Soul 4 Real were opening....) What underreported summer shows are happening in your neck of the woods? [MySpace]

  • I think it may hurt Maura to hear that Boyz II Men recently played a show in Atlanta where the opener was ... Morris Day and the Time.

  • East Providence, Rhode Island just had amazing billboards for their (usually very Portuguese/Cape Verdean) Heritage Festival, which for some reason had Loverboy as its main attraction this year.

And the Dropkick Murphys were just at McCoy Stadium, which is only interesting because last year it was that Counting Crows/Collective Soul/Live tour from hell, and the year before that it was Bob Dylan.

  • @bcapirigi: Isn't it fair to say that that far into New England, the Dropkick Murphys are as big as Dylan as of, let's say, October or November 2007 or so?

  • Stamford's Alive @ 5 has also provided such quality musical fare as Eve 6, Blind Melon and your favorite Lollapalooza band, Blues Traveler.

  • probably, yeah. but the show at mccoy stadium always kicks off some mysterious event called the Pawtucket Arts Festival, which as far as I know doesn't go any farther than the opening night concert at McCoy.
