Philadelphia-bred New Waver Robert Hazard, who performed the early-’80s hit “Escalator Of Life” (above) and wrote “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” which went to No. 2 on the U.S. pop charts after Cyndi Lauper covered it on her 1983 album She’s So Unusual, has passed away. Hazard died from issues related to pancreatic cancer, which had caused him to postpone some recent tour dates. He was 59. [Philly.com; HT MTS / YouTube]

Damn, never heard of this guy before and I am a 29 yr old New Wave fan. Love the video and it’s sad that it’s often death that brings stuff like this to my attention. I might have to dig through the ol’ video library and see if this appeared on any of my U-Matic reels and use it in the club next week.
Oh, how I loved this song back in junior high. Rest in peace, Mr. Hazard.
