UPDATED: Mirah’s SoundScan Success Revealed!

mirah.jpgSo “Fruits Of Your Garden” by the brainy-sensitive singer-songwriter Mirah debuted at No. 64 on SoundScan’s digital-tracks chart this week, selling 22,000 units after moving not even a dozen the week prior. Reasons behind this staggering leap are hard to find through the usual sources (by which I mean “Googling the title to see if any Yahoo! Answers pages come up”). Anyone know what the deal is? (And whatever the reason, I’m really glad that Mirah–not to mention her label, the indie stalwart K Records–is getting the extra scratch.) UPDATE: The song was on So You Think You Can Dance (thanks, Cortney!), in a performance that caused the judges to freak the f out. Video after the jump.

    I admit it, I bought all those downloads.

    Is this the Oh My God girl?

    I’d always wondered how the show picked its music, but this one has me pretty sure it’s the choreographer’s choice. The woman who put this piece together also used a remix of Hot Chip’s “Wrestlers” earlier in the season.

    As a casual watcher of this program, I have to say that this is not an atypical reaction from some of those judges. The middle one, the woman, does this at least three or four times every episode, and her laugh is psycho. But anyway.

    True, the judges are hilarious. I’m tickled, really, at how readily people will admit to having this show as a guilty pleasure.

    Good on Mirah; and to be honest, the choreographers have used lots of good music since the show started, but this is, I think, the most notable related uptick in sales/popularity that I know of.

    Wow, what a totally random place for a Mirah song to pop up.

    an idolator operative just told me that ANOTHER song of hers is being used tonight!

    @MayhemintheHood:

    No, that’s Ida Maria.

    Haha I have all of my Mirah songs from unlabeled mix CDs so when I put them on my computer I made up titles and this one is called “You Don’t Want Me Anymore.” But I’m glad I know the real name now and that it got some exposure. Rad song.

  13. lindseykai  |   Posted on Aug 8th, 2008

    @Kate Richardson: Actually, the song is just called “The Garden.”

  14. Maura Johnston  |   Posted on Aug 8th, 2008

    @lindseykai: Huh, the SoundScan listing had it as “Fruits Of Your Garden”… I wonder why?

  15. Anonymous  |   Posted on Aug 8th, 2008

    Maura, the original song that appeared on the show is “The Garden” from the 2002 record “Advisory Committee”.

    “Fruits of Your Garden” is a new song incorporating elements of “The Garden” with a new chorus sung by Mirah and verses by Khaela Maricich of The Blow, and it appears on the 2007 album “Joyride: Remixes.”

    @charmingtedious: Gotcha. Well, it’s the remix that’s selling…

  17. Halfwit  |   Posted on Aug 7th, 2008

    @narymary: Yeah, but it’s a great song, and a great pick for the dance. Thumbs to everyone involved.
