Metallica’s New Song: Definitely A Lot Better Than The Album Title

AP080613033903.jpgSpeaking of festivals, this weekend Metallica played the whittled-to-one-day Ozzfest, and as an addendum to their “nothing after 1991″ set the band debuted a song from the forthcoming Death Magnetic, which they’d finished mixing Saturday morning. “Cyanide” is one of the “seven-minute, eight-minute, nutty-ass songs” that incorporates “kind of hardcore, nutty super-fast speed stuff” that Lars Ulrich promised would be on Death Magnetic back when it was but a gleam in Rick Rubin’s eye. And it actually sounds kind of good, if a little overlong, with maybe one or two too many repetitions of the “Wherever I May Roam”-reminiscent bit. YouTube embed after the jump, along with just-announced tour dates.

Those can’t be all the tour dates, can they? Des Moines and Omaha, but no Minneapolis/St. Paul?

The only think that I could tell from that shitty video is that they’re still quite full of themselves.

Will the whole tour be “nothing after 1991 with a new-song encore”? I’d see that.
