SOHH is floating the rumor that Jermaine Dupri will be removed from his position as head of the urban department at Island Def Jam, thanks in large part to a recent string of high-profile flops that includes Janet Jackson’s Discipline and Mariah Carey’s E=MC2, which still is having problems getting traction for a follow-up single for “Touch My Body.” What this means for the Dupri-helmed joint venture between Island Def Jam and TAG Body Spray is uncertain, but Dupri isn’t having the best week either way: He shuttered his Atlanta restaurant Cafe Dupri earlier this week, thanks to the crappy economy driving down profits. “Bottom line: if it doesn’t make money, it doesn’t make sense,” he told AllHipHop.com about the restaurant’s closure, although one suspects that statement could be easily translated to other subjects. FINALLY it’s about time. Forgot to mention he’s on the big flop of Nelly’s single “Stepped On My J’z” also. Yeah, we haven’t felt you for so many years, we aren’t feeling now.
At least he could just go behind the scenes and leave his voice off the tracks.
It would be kind of ironic in a cruel way if JD got canned for the underperformance of E=MC2, considering that he produced all 4 of the big hits off Emancipation, but didn’t have a hand in any of the new album’s singles (or maybe that’s the problem?). It’d be like he’s getting punished for making the company a mint before he was on their payroll.
@KrAzy Che3To:
Really? But “Y’ALL KNOW WHAT THIS!” never gets old right?
I hope this story is developing, just so we can get more posts with that picture.
@Al Shipley: I dunno, doesn’t this scream “I need to diversify my income streams asap”?
@Maura Johnston: Ah, yes. My introduction to Mickey Avalon!
I still remember this first time I saw this commercial, I had this whole story in my head of JD and Jeezy getting drunk on drank or something and, like, insisting that their stylist be in the commercial or else R Kelly would show up with his baretta.
But really, it’s not terribly shameful as the first Boost Mobile “Anthem” was done by Kanye, Ludacris, and the Game.
I was heartbroken yesterday. I just started a new job and my CTO said he wanted to take me to lunch, and we were going to go to Cafe Dupri. I had no idea it existed, nor did he know it closed. The building looks like a ghetto strip club from the outside, and its sort of nondescript and windowless. Probably why, in the center of most Atlanta businesses, it didn’t do well. Odd location. I’m still bummed I missed my chance to eat at Cafe Dupri though, it would have at least made a good twitter comment.
@janine: something tells me JD and Jeezy had absolutely no idea who they’d be co-starring with.
@Weezy F Baby: Well, that and Mickey Avalon is not a stylist…
seriously though, i had a couple friends that worked at island around the same time that JD came in (they, of course, have since been laid off).. i guess dupri was constantly listening to new music and talking to people about it and just was kind of a music geek. too bad dude might lose his job.
Inside sources say this is BS, but we shall see…
