Whitney Houston Saves A Rough News Day

My friends, the Idolator RSS reader is rough, rough going during the waning days of August. To give you a sampling of the “news” items I can write about right now:

• Miley Cyrus is charging $250 to get into her sweet 16, and yet she still wants someone to buy her a car.

• There’s some Fall Out Boy viral-marketing campaign-related confusion that I apparently need a pair of heads to wrap around.

• Sheryl Crow has decided to give away an album that no one wanted to buy in the name of “voter awareness.” Also, getting her name back in the press.

• And to top it off, 50 Cent is saying that female music writers should lick his balls if they want to be successful.

Good times, right? Well, I’d like to give a shoutout to the fine blog Burning The Ground for posting the 12-inch of Whitney Houston’s “Love Will Save The Day,” which is sorta sappy but peppy enough to, at the very least, make me realize why I got excited about omnivorously listening to music in the first place. (This is maybe second on my list of top Whitney singles behind “I’m Your Baby Tonight.” And I’m going to choose to not focus on Whitney’s current travails in order to prolong my current state of enjoyment.)

    I forgot Miley Cyrus had a song called 7 Things for a minute, but I like the quote in Us Weekly:

    “It’s gonna be an awesome party with more than 7 things I like,” she tells ET. “It’s gonna be totally awesome. I hope it’s a great time.”

    That’s my favorite part of any of those articles. Which I just read ALL of for NO REASON.

    This is maybe second on my list of top Whitney singles behind “I’m Your Baby Tonight.”

    For the record, you and I apparently have nearly identical taste in Whitney singles. Generally dislike most of it, love those two. (Among the latter-day, I also have a soft spot for “My Love Is Your Love.”)

    @Chris Molanphy: I’m pretty sure this came up a few months ago, but for me it’s definitely “It’s Not Right But It’s Okay” and “Heartbreak Hotel”.

    Haven’t been able to hear the embed yet.

    Damn! I’ve never heard this before. AWESOME.

    @bcapirigi: …I forgot Miley Cyrus had a song called 7 Things…

    I also saw what she did there, and I wondered if Miley and her people asked that it be printed as “7 things” instead of “seven things”, which is what the style manuals recommend.

    @Chris Molanphy: My Love I Your Love is my favorite. And All At Once, which technically wasn’t a single.

    “I got some advice for all aspiring women journalists, it may not make the best sellers list, but lick my balls and you are on the road to the riches!”

    I love how it’s the road to THE riches. Somehow that makes it genius.

    @maura: You didn’t ask this, but you did this, and that’s fantastic.

    You should think about bringing back “liner notes” for these kinds of “can’t really make a proper post” items. Or maybe do a similar post (”cutout bin”?) with all of the lamest stories out there with a snarky intro like this. Or something like Gawker’s old “glaring omissions” column — surely you get lots of crazy emails and press-release “tips” too?

    Don’t worry — we’ll click through the jump and write funny things about the crazy stuff.

    Maura, were you really intending to quote Natasha Bedingfield on the tag?

    @The Illiterate:

    Why did I scroll up thinking ‘oh my God, she did NOT quote Pocketful of Sunshine!’ I hate that damn song.

    I love everyone’s taste in Whitney songs here.

    My mom was a Whitney fan next level, so I am familiar with *every* song in her oeuvre, and I have to say that the ones named here are the best. Oh, and I also admit to a secret soft spot for “Shoop” from Waiting to Exhale, although maybe it’s because I shamefully admit to loving everything about that movie.

    Naw as far as I’m concerned Whitney didn’t start gettin’ good and real til she hit the curb. This is the Heartbreak HO-tel, this is the Heartbreak HO-tel.

    @The Illiterate: @Tauwan: guys, i was quoting a calgon ad! only i elected not to use the product placement.

    I know this song is 20 Y.O., and there’s nothing *wrong* with this mix, but if this is part of Whitney’s “comeback” attempt, I see this upcoming album as the “new” Hard Candy.

    I want WH to succeed with her new album, but I don’t have high hopes.

    “Sorry.”
