So the word is that the leak of Metallica’s Death Magnetic last night wasn’t spurred by piracy rings or someone breaking into Rick Rubin’s house–nope, apparently the album’s all over the Internet now because a shop in France broke the street date and sold “a number of copies” yesterday morning. There is something about this story that smells totally, utterly fishy to me, especially since Lars Ulrich is acting all zen about the leak (”Everybody’s happy. It’s 2008 and it’s part of how it is these days, so it’s fine. We’re happy.”). Perhaps someone in the Metallica camp is trying to test the “well, Tha Carter III leaked and it was fine for Lil Wayne’s sales” theory? [Blabbermouth]

I agree that there is a high “fishiness” quotient present…for as foaming at the mouth against file-sharing as Ulrich has been, his laid back additude makes me think that this was a deliberate “leak”…

It just occurs to me that perhaps they’ve decided that they don’t want to look like Axl-style douchebags in this situation. Maybe they’re getting soft in their old age.
He seems to be having his minions destroy the leaks, a la Prince. But, I did get it, maybe it’s deliberate, who knows?
The bigger question is what did we ever do to France?
I skipped around, it’s seemingly better than anything after Justice, yet still pretty flat. If they were smart, they’d simply give it away ie Radiohead/NIN/Girl Talk with a message on a website that reads
“We fucked up, big time. So sorry we made you watch us as we profited on art sales from paintings you paid for. Lars can’t help it, he has a coke problem and a little wang. This one’s on us!”
