deniro50cover2ut1.jpg Perhaps you’ve been watching the recent semi-demi-hemi-kerfuffle involving Robin Thicke and Vibe magazine. Perhaps not. Here’s the short version: Thicke wants to be on the mag’s cover and was politely rebuffed. He mooned about it but seems to have accepted it, in a pouty sort of way, by claiming the mag doesn’t allow whites on the cover, cheerfully ignoring the presences of Eminem, the Beastie Boys, Justin Timberlake, and others on Vibe’s front. Today, Danyel Smith, Vibe’s editor-in-chief, released a brief, noncommittal statement regarding the matter, noting that the publication is “flattered by his desire” for the cover, and making damn sure to include Eminem and Robert De Niro among the list of recent featured faces. And that, as they say, should be that. [Vibe]

Yeah, Thicke needs to seriously slow his roll. I mean, ol’ boy has barely sold any records and he wants to be on the cover of one of the most capitalistic and sales-driven mags out there? Please. That would be like TV on the Radio bitching for not being on the cover of Rolling Stone (who still need to explain how they didn’t manage to come up with a Lil Wayne cover this year, but that’s another issue entirely).

In this seriously effed-up economy, it’s more and more about the bottom line.

Move some units, Robin. Hell, if you even went Gold you’d have a semblance of an argument…

Simple answer, Robin: Vibe don’t want you. Man up, and move on.

@T’Challa: Uh — kid’s last record is platinum-plus. (Final SoundScans are somewhere around 1.6 million.)

I agree he’s a whiner, but…he’s hardly underperforming compared with some other cover subjects Vibe has had. Nevermind the way “superstar” rappers have been underperforming (i.e., barely gold) lately.

Wait, I don’t understand - the dad from “Growing Pains” wants to be on the cover of a rap magazine?
