Popbytes has an extremely enthusiastic review of the Dolly Parton-assisted musical based off the workplace comedy 9 To 5, which is now playing in Los Angeles and scheduled to hit Broadway this spring.

i was so very impressed and being a huge fan of the movie i was worried it might get lost in musical translation but dolly parton did an INCREDIBLE job with the all the music & lyrics (plus the plot remains completely intact – props to patricia resnick for the book) dolly is totally going to win a tony award for best original score and i can see 9 to 5 winning best new musical – it’s that good! (trust me on this – i’m a huge musical theater guru) kudos to the entire ensemble but i must give specific shout outs to the three main gals allison janney, stephanie j. block and megan hilty (who i saw in wicked here in LA) and last but not least marc kudisch who plays their nasty sexist boss franklin hart jr. (a role originated by dabney coleman) i can’t wait to buy the cast recording (the music was so good)

Apparently during the show’s debut there was a technical difficulty, which gave Dolly an opportunity and practice her lemons-into-lemonaide philosophy and entertain the crowd with a few impromptu numbers while the stage crew patched things up, which some generous soul with a cell phone video camera thoughtfully captured and put on YouTube.

“9 to 5”

“Are you sangin’?!”

“I Will Always Love You”

“I know I don’t sound like Whitney, but I make more money than her off of this song.”

There’s a (highly illegal, I’m sure) video of the closing number on YouTube:

To be honest it looks a little community theater-ish, but that’s not to say it won’t be totally and completely awesome in every single way. I plan to make it the first and probably only show I see on Broadway. (Those things are expensive!)
