Never let it be said that Kanye West is a slacker: The latest version of “Love Lockdown” is up and streaming on his blog, only, what, 14 hours after he said he was reworking the track. Let the debate over whether or not this reworking is a cheat continue, but take note: The drums on the chorus absolutely slay. (And I’m starting to wonder if the lack of a bridge is actually something of a deliberate aesthetic choice, a way to sonically communicate the dying embers of romance that Kanye’s singing about. Capping said monotony off with a strangled, muffled scream only seems to underline that, you know?) [kanYe West: Blog]
That Was Fast, Kanye

It’s good that this time there’s an actual audible difference. Remember when he brought Timbaland in at the 11th hour to re-do the drums on “Stronger” for Graduation, but the end result on the album was indistinguishable from the single version that had been out for months?
Autotune sucks no matter what Kanye says.
In the same vein but incredibly hotter is: Paavoharju’s “Kevattrumpu”.
Single of the Month.
Nicely done. Right on about those drums.
Okay, I’ll eat some of my words: this is massively improved.
I’m starting to hear it less as an R&B joint and more as a dark, almost-freestyle jam with minor-key dancefloor allusions. On that score, I guess it doesn’t need a bridge, per se, but I disagree that it wouldn’t be improved by one.
Still: fair play to Kanye. I’m now modestly more optimistic about the rushed fourth album.
This is going to be a great album and a sea change from what Kanye has done; if Kanye’s mining his personal troubles (mom, girlfriend, other perceived slights magnified by Kanye’s ego) for an aching ebb of an album from the high tide that was Graduation, well, then, I’m buying it being good.
I would’ve bought it anyway, but.
