Make sure you watch the interview following this 1987 performance of “Drill” on The Late Show, in which the erstwhile Chrissy Snow called the British art-rock outfit “sort of a far-out kinda group.” And that’s the least awkward part. (Really, I feel like describing it in any more detail would utterly spoil it.) [YouTube; HT Ned Raggett]

There was obviously some sort of big misunderstanding
was she a fill-in host or something?
@borntohula: for Joan Rivers.
@Maura Johnston: ah. that explains a few things, but it doesnt make up for the awkwaaaardddnesss of that video.
Suzanne Somers + Bruce Gilbert = final scene in Close Encounters
Sure, things would no doubt have gone MUCH better if Joan Rivers had been there. “And a dugga-digga-dugga to you, Joan!”
Can’t wait to see Wire on tour next month, even if Bruce isn’t on stage.
I always forget how close, yet distinct, the underground was to the mainstream in the late 80s-early 90s. They certainly were not topping the American charts in 1987. Anyone remember The Drill album? Ten different variants of this tune. Fantastic.
The hell…I just watched this for the first time yesterday after seeing it on an mp3 blog I frequent. Anyhow, wish the interview segment had been longer, s’funny stuff.
