Recent Mercury Prize winners Elbow might be taking an odd career turn with their next release, a childrens’ album, but don’t worry: It’s a kids’ album that takes the genre quite seriously. “We initially thought that it would be great to make music for children because the lads in the band have got kids and they were saying how little really decent music for children there is,” said singer Guy Garvey, who added, “you can go somewhere in writing for children that you can’t do with adults.” This would be the first full-length aimed at children from a Mercury Prize winner, although 2004 recipients Franz Ferdinand had a track on the compilation Colours Are Brighter. I would comment further, but I’m a little afraid of how what I might say will be construed by the band’s deeply passionate and massive US fanbase. [Billboard]
Now That They’ve Won Over The Critics, Elbow Are Ready To Appeal To The Kids

Because, of course, I have to comment…
Perhaps a Dan Zanes diss, but if you knew the state of kids music in Britain, you’d totally understand Garvey — a complete and total wasteland, the genre across the pond.
Sounds like they’re kinda going for a Nilsson “The Point!” thing…
@SAShepherd: I don’t think Garvey is really dissing Zanes, but I have to admit the idea amused me.
Oh, and ‘92 finalist Saint Etienne have an import EP for kids called “Up the Wooden Hills” which isn’t bad. And a bunch of other finalists had tracks on Colours Are Brighter…
@Dan Gibson: I agree, and I challenge you to use the tag again… As for Zanes, he’s reached the point where saying he’s overrated is akin to saying the Beatles are overrated.
At least you got the bit about the US fanbase right this time. ;)
I wonder if it’ll hit the high marks for childrens’ albums set by Kimya Dawson (at least 90% poop jokes).
Shut up Dan, let it die about the Elbow feud, this could become some sort Blog Coast - Fans Coast type deal :P
