@dog door: The best example I have is Killing Joke. Those guys have been around for freaking ever and the last two albums they released were damn brutal, at least as far as I'm concerned.

Metallica has just gone milquetoast as all out, and yes, fine, I get it: they deserve it, they sold a shitload of records, they took on their fans and the wascally downloaders and fought the 'good fight.' So yeah, those old dudes can stop worrying about what it means to be rock and just lay back in their Armani slacks and chill dude.

Because their just wasting their time trying to go back. Write some steel guitar ballads dudes.

Meanwhile, i hear harder stuff on Adult Swim.

Regarding the Taibbi article, the “frightened liberal” take is way off the mark. First off, Taibbi readers can attest that the guy frequently skewers politicians on the right AND left; in this regard, he’s an equal opportunity hater (and I mean that in a good way). Don’t confuse fear with loathing. What comes through in the article isn’t fright, but pure, visceral disgust.

just thinking out loud here ---

the most interesting thing to me about the whole SKOM thing was that at no point- not in therapy, not during a fight, nowhere as far as I could tell- did it ever occur to them that the reasons their music may be losing its edge was because maybe they just weren't that into metal anymore... i mean, they're older, sober, completely different people then they were 30 years ago or whatever. yet at no point does it occur to them to do something other than metal.

I guess now with all their managers and labels needing a big album, they HAVE to do a "metallica" album... they can't do something different if they wanted to... which isn't very metal... or hardcore (lifestyle-wise). they've become businessmen. so they're kind of trapped... which isn't a very good place to be if you want to put out a metal album, which for all its formula is defined by its power, ferocity, aggression, balls-to-the-wall attitude.

that picture of hetfield shopping at armani basically says it all. how could they put out a metallica album? they're not even really Metallica anymore...

Personally, after listening to Death Magnetic a couple of times, I found that when today’s Metallica wasn’t trying to be Meshuggah, they were trying to be yesterday’s Metallica…don’t think they did either one very well. Lots of sound and fury, signifying nothing. Listeners wanting honest guitar rock should check out Airbourne and leave this one sitting on the shelf….

YC should mention here that he wrote the Metallica entry for the most recent Rolling Stone Record Guide...

The 2004 RS Record Guide? There is no Metallica entry in my copy (an omission I found mind-boggling). Was that corrected in a subsequent pressing?

The first time I remember seeing Fricke was on MTV News' coverage of Kurt Cobain's suicide, on the day it happened. Fricke made an in-studio appearance, behind the news desk, with Kurt Loder. I was 16, and I remember thinking, who are these old guys and why are they telling me how important Kurt was to my generation?
