Billy Corgan has announced the Smashing Pumpkins’ 20th-anniversary tour, which in a few cities will be highlighted by two-night stints that will have completely different set lists (one will be dubbed “Black Sunshine,” the other “White Crosses”). OK yeah I know that I have previously been a bit skeptical about all of Billy Corgan’s anniversarizing, and calling this November jaunt a “20th-anniversary tour” is a bit of a stretch given the lineup changes and “hiatuses” and what-have-you, but whatever, I’m excited. I’ll admit it. Mainly because the “two nights, no repeats” structure of the shows opens the door for a lot of rarities to get some stage time, including “Starla,” above, which was a b-side for the “I Am One” single and which has a crazy awesome coda. Gibson was where I last saw them in 2000….and I think I just want to let that be the final memory.
They won’t get my money but I have to begrudgingly admit they picked two stellar Chicago venues to hold their own 4 night stand here.
I’d actually consider this if not for the “no repeats” thing. Massey Hall is one of the greatest venues in North America and is pretty intimate (2500 seats, great sound) and the ticket prices are reasonable (around $50), but I’m not likely to be able to get tickets for both nights and really wouldn’t want to be there on the night they decide to play mostly MACHINA and Zeitgeist tracks…

Love the band but will never give them my concert dollar again after Billy Corgan berated the crowd at a Lollapalooza ‘94 show I was unfortunate enough to endure. What a prick.

No, it was an anti-hipsters diatribe that quickly devolved into a you’re-all-looking-at-me-and-judging-me-and-I-hate-you-all rant against pretty much anyone within eyeshot. And then he drew out the bridge of the song he was playing to turn it into a whiny little rant about how people can’t tell him anything, blah-blah-blah. Oh, it was insufferable.
Such a tool. Makes the occasional great record, but…oy. A tool.
@Ned Raggett: Me too! I saw Lolla twice that year and he gave the same rambling speech almost word for word in the same section of the same song. Then apologised for it both times as if it were some sort of “spontaneous” train wreck. What a joke.
Worth it to see the Beasties twice that year, though. Tough to rock a festival crowd that hard.

@DJorn: Beasties should’ve headlined that Lolla edition. They put on a much better show than SP did, to my great surprise.
Of course Starla is on the Pieces Iscariot album so it’s a bit more accessible that way.
Billy met a girl at a party and liked her name so he named the song after her. When he met up with her later, he asked if she liked the song he named after her. “What song?” “Starla.” “Starla? My name is Darla!”
