Pharrell Williams: “I’m A PC… Except Not Really”

Last week we discussed Jerry Seinfeld getting dumped by Microsoft in favor of the high-powered trio of Pharell Williams, Eva Longoria, and Deepak Chopra. It’s looking like the folks over Microsoft vetted these candidates less than Sarah Palin. Longoria owns a MacBook and Chopra has blogged approvingly of iPods, but the kicker, I think, is this:

Yep, that’s a gold-plated iPhone Pharrell is holding. And his Billionaire Boys Club blog has a nod to iPod designer Jonathan Ive. And he owned an iPod.

Man, I miss the days when celebrities really used the products they were endorsing.

Pharrell is a man of few words. The musical maestro was not particularly forthcoming in his interview with GQ, but the magazine still tried its best to get the scoop on his upcoming gig as a music consultant for the 84th Annual Academy Awards ...

    I don’t mean to nitpick, but I have an iPod….and I only use PCs. They aren’t mututally exclusive and I don’t really think liking the iPod signifies a Mac endorsement.

    @SomeSound-MostlyFury: Ditto.

    Also…”AHHHHHH!! uhhHHhhhhhh!”

    One can safely assume that more iPods are plugged into PCs than Macs. Very weak.

    Yeah, the ad wasn’t “I’m a Zune.” Because we know only one person is (or was) actually a Zune:

    HOLY SHIT! BREAKING NEWS!

    Someone at Idolator needs to work on their listening skills. The ad says, “I’m a PC.” Don’t worry, I work with many English Learners who would make the same mistake.

    @Audif Jackson Winters III: Hey! I’m a Zune! :-P

    @amrcanpoet: @Audif Jackson Winters III: @AngusChiron: There was actually a video up that mysteriously disappeared while I was writing this where Pharrell claims he’s a Mac guy.

    And while the ad says, “I’m a PC,” implicit in–at least to me–that is that you are also a Windows fan. They really should have gone after PC partisans, rather than people who answered the call of the highest bidder. Maybe Eva Longoria used Windows on her Macbook or Pharrell plugs his iPhone into a PC, but something to me says that a guy whose blog praises Jonathan Ive (and, to be fair, he might not have written that) probably has a Mac around the house. Finding someone without an iPod is hard, sure, and most of them plug probably plug into PCs. Absolutely. But to have someone up there proclaiming “I’m a PC” aka “I am a shill for Windows” who thinks enough of his iPhone to get it gold-plated? Sorry. Not nitpicking.

    I have my iPod plugged into my PC, but my primary computer is an iBook. So what does that makes me other than too lazy to transfer all my music files to my Mac?

    @DaeSu: Bi?

    @goldsounds: Haha.

    @goldsounds: Remarkably, my mother would consider that an improvement!

    @SomeSound-MostlyFury: Agreed. Although I will say the Pharrell “ups” is so brief comparatively brief that I can almost hear him ask for the check after the camera cut.

    Also agreed: latter day Orson Wells in shill mode is AWESOME. I heard the fishsticks commercial but never saw this. I like how French bubbly makes him sound inexplicably Irish. Alcohol, folks! It’s magic.

    @Lucas Jensen: I know this sounds blasphemous, but I work at [insert very popular digital media company] where most of the office has Macbook Pros… but only use Windows Vista on it. No freaking kidding! (In fact, in my dept. I’m the only 1/2 people who uses the Mac side of his Mac.) Does that mean they are PCs or Macs?

    It kinda makes my head hurt whenever I have to show my boss how to search for file on the Mac OS side of Macbook. I think I need a raise.

    But, I guess the main thing is that the Average Joe/Jane audience for these ads don’t really care to know such details… just us über-geeks. :)

    Mac is a luxury brand. every celebrity is going to own or have owned in the past a Mac product.

    maybe Microsoft shouldn’t have shelled out so much to have celebrity endorsements. this is like finding hypocrisy in the fact that Tiger Woods probably also drives a Porsche in addition to his Chevy Tahoe or whatever car he endorses.
