@MrStarhead: I see this AC/DC song as the turning point of the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart. It will go one of two ways:

1. It will merely become a complete wasteland simply of "rock" songs

2. It will cause a sudden, sharp drop in active rock-leaning songs being played on alternative formats, leading to #1's like they were in the charts' first few years (when The Jesus and Mary Chain could easily get a #1 and Counting Crows could score a #1 with a completely obscure b-side) and bands like Does It Offend You, Yeah?, Locksley and Darker My Love can actually chart on the Modern Rock Tracks (which they should be able to be easily if it wasn't for bands like Theory of a Deadman and Disturbed in their way to free up a few more spots).

Again, the two alternative radio stations in my vicinity (Providence's venerable cornerstone WBRU and Boston's WFNX) do not play as much active rock leaning bands as WBCN (i mentioned their situation above) so I really don't have a full picture of nationwide patterns (they DO play stuff like Three Days Grace, but not as much as a song like "Lucid Dreams" by Franz Ferdinand or "Kids" by MGMT).

Darius is finally where he belongs, New Country is the easy listening rock of the 90s. Oh yeah and I vote Anthony Anderson for the Charley Pride bio-pic, maybe they can combine it with a new Police Academy sequel.

@DocStrange: Yeah, I don't know which Atlanta station is reporting to the Modern Rock charts now that 99X is gone, but two of the three contenders are quite likely to play some AC/DC (the third is more of a AAA station).

You know, I haven’t even heard this new Offspring #1 once (I do know the chorus for “Hit That” but the rest of that song is a blur to me).

Also, the new Kings of Leon song “Sex on Fire” is in the Modern Rock Top 20 now (they’ve only had one other song to chart on the Modern Rock Tracks – no, not “Molly’s Chambers”, “Four Kicks” or “On Call” – but the now semi-forgotten “The Bucket”), and the new Oasis song “The Shock of the Lightning” (easily their best track since “Gas Panic!” is probably gonna hit the Top 10 soon. I don’t get the AC/DC song in the Modern Rock Tracks chart (because WBRU and WFNX sure aren’t playing it, but it’s been pointed out to me about six trillion times that both stations are not representative of regular Modern Rock formatted stations). I bet the stations that are playing this song are radio stations like Boston’s WBCN, which reports to Billboard, Mediabase and Radio & Records as an “Alternative” station, but actually plays everything (Active Rock/Mainstream, Alternative Rock/Modern Rock and Classic Rock).

and i’ll add that the entire rucker album is really good. not world-altering, but if you like hootie (as i do), this is right up your alley. i’m happy for his crossover success. there was enough ‘country-ish’ elements in a lot of hootie material where one can see the transition being relatively easy – in a musical sense. his appearance at the top of the charts is another matter, and i am happy for him.

I had a serious song crush on "Hold My Hand" back in the day. Even now, Hootie... always seemed to be the least objectionable of their ilk (remember Blessid Union of Souls?).

I apologize for being out of touch here, but... Apocalyptica? That Apocalyptica? The guys who recorded novelty cello-quartet versions of Metallica songs 10 years ago? On a Modern Rock radio chart? I just don't know what to believe anymore.

Also... The Offspring? That Offspring? Don't they have a hot sauce company to be running?
