As rumored last month, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will provide the halftime entertainment for Super Bowl XLIII next February. Just think: If the Super Bowl producers can score U2 to get in there for Super Bowl XLIV, then they’ll have a six-musical-act rotation–McCartney, the Stones, Prince, Tom Petty, the Boss, and Bono et al–that will definitely appeal to what’s left of the masses! Sure, they’re collectively long in the tooth, but maybe by the time 2020 rolls around the NFL will have moved on to 100% holographic halftimes, thanks to their only other “mainstream music” possibility by then being an Elvis Presto impersonator.     I liked what Pitchfork wrote about this: Yes, he will probably have to play “Born in the USA” to a billion people who don’t get that it’s NOT a super patriotic song about how America is great but about how much America sucks.

    And then some bozo at FOX News who has never heard more than the chorus will criticize Springsteen for “changing the lyrics” to make a “political point”.

    @DocStrange: True, but given that “BITUSA” wasn’t included often in the set lists for the shows on the Magic tour, I think Springsteen has put that one aside for the time being. I’m sure he’ll trot out “Born To Run”, plus one from Magic like “Radio Nowhere” and maybe “Glory Days” from the BITUSA album. If he does anything war-related (maybe not so likely given the venue) it would probably be “Last to Die” – a song that is a lot harder to misinterpret.

    I would also expect him to play “American Land” – his encore closer for the entire Magic tour.
