Janelle Monae Parties Like It’s The Apocalypse

The video for Janelle Monae’s “Many Moons” is a lengthy affair that recalls Metropolis and George Michael’s “Freedom 90,” with the droid-obsessed R & B singer taking on multiple mechanical personas while waxing apocalyptic about the planet’s future. It’s pretty arresting, with Monae’s manic dancing in particular underscoring the desperation that lurks underneath all the surface glamour. (Not to mention that the source material for the song’s hook is pretty undeniable.) [YouTube]

Damn cool video. I love her style, I just wish I liked her music more. Maybe with time?

I don’t know about anyone else, but the beat and synth lines reminded me of this so much I thought it might be a sample at first:

I’m totally going to start wearing the saddle shoes that have been collecting dust in my closet for the last 10 years.

anyone who sees Janelle perform live will be instantly won over - I
think she’s going to take over the world that way. She has legions of
fans here in Atlanta - stunning performer, brilliant music, and a
    really sweet, very cool lady.

@Cos: I thought about the Hives as well - not just because of the song, but also because of the assortment of black-and-white outfits that look strikingly like their clothes from the last tour. And they also did a pretty good of “Hey Ya!”, so there you go.

I think Leila and I were at the same show. (Opening for Gnarls Barkley, right?) Yes, agreed!

    Hmm -

Lengthy and non-sensical intro? Multiple versions of the performer? Swinging band on a shiny stage?

    Do I like? Hey Ya!

The production is so cluttered. I feel like I have to stop everything just to really “hear” the song. The high concept video is more distracting than interesting.

She was really, really good at the Big Boi Ballet in Atlanta back in the spring.

Seconding (thirding?) comments about her live show. Incredible.

Also - love the pinball song.
