Travis Trip Over That Fine Line Between “Abstract” And “Clinical”

Let’s get past the obvious Georgia O’Keefe channeling that the cover for Travis’ new album is doing and talk about it on a straight-up aesthetic level; it may utilize one of the worst color schemes I’ve seen in my entire life–and I’m including my das of watching scrambled cable here. You’ve got the Mr. Yuk green of the iris playing off the orange, which doesn’t look like Crayola’s concept of “flesh” as much as it does a bad spray tan. The album leaked over the weekend, and I’m pretty certain that the combination of the Scottish outfit’s ready-for-Grey’s Anatomy sonic aesthetic and this palette from hell will result in at least six reviews that utilize the phrase “Technicolor yawn.”

These guys. They’re a new century’s Del Amitri — hang around long enough, someone somewhere will say they’ve ‘paid their dues’ and a song will then forever be on the radio somewhere.

It’s actually kind of shocking to think about how big Travis were in the UK around 2000. I was at Glastonbury that year and there were probably 90,000 people watching their Pyramid Stage performance.

Hey, whuttev – I’m pretty sure they’re self-releasing this album, so any press is good press…

“Mr. Yuk Green” – awesome – I wonder if they sell that at Home Depot – it’d be perfect for my bathroom…

Actually, this color scheme is great…if the product is rainbow sherbet.

It’s lovely. We should be talking about non-sequitur album titles.
    Who the hell is Travis?

i’ve never been so enraged at a music “writer”’s ignorance over a band. Travis? Grey’s Anatomy? check these two songs off the new album then save yourself the embarrassment by editing this post, please.

The Man Who is a great album. What should have been their stateside success. Stolen by Coldplay.

I really loved their first three albums. And on recent listens. They’ve held up.

Their last one was great…this new one, not so great.

For what it’s worth, this cover is re-used artwork (with permission) from a short-story collection by Roald Dahl called “Someone Like You.”

And if that didn’t work, here’s the actual link:
