Britney And Christina Owe A Lot To Rachel Stevens (And Richard X)

One thing about the current vogue for super-stompy pop singles: It makes me wonder if, instead of “the future,” many of today’s leading pop tartlets aren’t looking back to 2004, when former S Club 7 lead singer Rachel Stevens hooked up with song-melding knob twiddler Richard X for the champagne-soaked ode to getting to the top by any means necessary “Some Girls.”. (The allusions to oral sex didn’t stop the track from being used as the anthem for a British charity–take note, ladies.) After all, 2004 was the year that both girls were coming down from their makeout session with Madonna; Britney was ill-advisedly marrying herself off left and right, and Christina was coming off the success of Stripped. Perhaps they’ve just been catching up with their record acquisitions from then in recent days? In any event, listen to “Some Girls” above and the two newer tracks below, and tell me that you don’t hear a lot of similarities.

“Womanizer,” co-written by the Atlanta production duo the Outsyders:

“Keeps Gettin’ Better,” which was co-written by Aguilera and Linda Perry:

Sure, the Aguilera song has a bit of a Goldfrapp feel to it as well, but then again, they’re both sipping from the same trough in this case. I

You can’t forget Pink’s So What, and Katy Perry’s I Kissed a Girl. The reason being is that they’re in 12/4th time.

Love Rachel Stevens. Love her. “Nothing Good About This Goodbye” will always be a forgotten #1 to me.

um, that Rachel Stevens track sounds EXACTLY like Goldfrapp. At least Xtina borrows a little more from other sources (and, you know, has a totally different voice). Britney’s track is (a) 238472983 times catchier than the others, and (b) the least Goldfrapp-sweating of the three.
