Rap City, the 19-year-old BET program chronicling the latest in hip hop videos, will be no more as of the end of this month. The move isn’t terribly surprising, considering BET is part of the Viacom family and eliminating music content from basic cable seems to be the company’s m.o. as of late Still, the show was such an essential part of my after school routine that it’s a little disappointing to see the show go–even if the network had seemed to be killing the show slowly, even moving it to the 1 a.m. time slot previously occupied by reruns of The Parkers. First they took away Video Soul and BET Uncut, and now Rap City? If I were whoever they have hosting 106th and Park these days, I’d update my resume. [NY Times]

Terrence J and Rocsi, Dan. My brother and I called Rocsi’s shtick “Look at me! I’m a girl!” shortly after she joined the show, and it hasn’t changed much.
Sad, sad, sad — it was part of my afterschool routine as well, and a great way for a white boy in the rural south to really start getting his head around hip-hop.

Used to love Rap City. I appreciated that they played more obscure stuff than Yo! MTV Raps! Now if I could just find my Three Times Dope and Awesome Dre tapes, I’d be a happy man.
