Stars Of The ’90s Continue To Align For Shows, Meals, Fever Dreams Of Fans

I think we’ve made enough jokes about the many broken-up bands of yesteryear reuniting just in time to grab their last bit of pre-global-crash money for you to anticipate the punchline even before I get to the end of this sentence. So let’s just get to the meat of the post, shall we? News on reunion shows by Hum and Letters to Cleo, as well as some dudes hoping against hope that this year’s Coachella will bring Athens’ finest out into the desert heat, after the jump.

• Midwestern guitar-rock stalwarts Hum will play a New Year’s Eve show at the Double Door, to the delight of Time Out Chicago’s Brent DiCrescenzo and a couple of brand managers for Cadillac.

• Kay Hanley will take time out from backing up Miley Cyrus to play a few shows with her old band, Letters to Cleo, and maybe if you ask nicely, she’ll perform a verse or two from the still utterly playable Josie And The Pussycats soundtrack.

• And finally, not that any performers have been announced yet, but Coachella ‘09 will take place from April 17-19, with the country-tinged Stagecoach Festival taking over the Empire Polo Field in Indio, Calif. Someone’s already started the ever-helpful “Neutral Milk Hotel for Coachella ‘09″ thread. I place the likelihood of that happening at about 1%, but you never know.

Giant festivals like Coachella and All Tomorrow’s Parties have made a name for themselves by bringing back bands people thought they’d never see again. No one’s saying the NFL should trot out Neutral Milk Hotel at halftime, cool as that would be.

I think you should have embedded the clip of Hum playing “Stars” on 120 Minutes back in ‘94 when the dude wears some serious cut-off jean shorts.

I will accept no Hum-bashing. None. I loved them 12 years ago and they hold up spectacularly today. Put on a good pair of headphones, crank it up as loud as it goes, and listen to Downward Is Heavenward. It doesn’t get much better.

I purchased my tickets to the show as soon as I saw this post. Thank you Idolator.

This would explain why I didn’t see Kay Hanley or Stacy Jones performing with Miley Cyrus on Good Morning America (or one of those shows) this summer.

Hum are on of the best bands of the 90s. Downward is Heavenward is a classic. It still holds up as well as Nevermind. Sure its not as groundbreaking but it sounds as good today as it did then.

Damn – I may have to skip my annual Empty Bottle NYE for Hum this year.

    I miss early ’90’s Champaign/Urbana bands…

Hum’s Matt Talbott is now a dad to several kids, coaches football, has a studio and
is currently teaching a class at Milliken University in Decatur, IL. he’s honestly
too busy to do a full-scale Hum reunion; i interviewed him a few months ago and
that’s pretty much what he said. doing the occasional show — and this is the first
Hum show in several years — is probably more fun than it is a cash-in.

also, his post-Hum band, Centaur, plays in Champaign occasionally. latest was last
    month at the Pygmalion Festival.
