I’m sure it’s more due to the booking power of Clear Channel than the promotional talents of morning show idiots Johnjay and Rich, but this year’s installment of KZZP’s Phooson looks to be the greatest collection of talent ever. Sure, the concert has abandoned its original mission of bringing music to the gap between Phoenix and Tucson (get it? that’s why it’s called Phooson) and set up shop at an amphitheater in Phoenix. But when you look at the lineup, you’ll realize that Casa Grande–the little town smack in the middle of the two bigger cities–couldn’t have handled this much star power.
Of course, the current lineup has the “…and many more” caveat, but what would the rest of the world do for entertainment on Dec. 5 if more acts were added to this incredible cavalcade of stars?
Rihanna
Katy Perry
Jesse McCartney
Fall Out Boy
Pussycat Dolls
and many more!
The Pussycat Dolls and Katy Perry? I’m going to need some heart medicine. However, you have to admire the career turn of Fall Out Boy, the only act on the bill who had any sort of organic growth as a band, playing gigs, etc. And now they’re sandwiched between a kid who got his start on a soap opera and a Hollywood burlesque show turned pop group with largely interchangeable parts. You guys have come a long way from playing the Knights of Columbus!
Phooson 2008 [KZZP]

who goes to something like this?
@tim_loves_cats:
Middle school girls, mostly.
Dan, thank you for continuously showing how lame Phoenix can be…just in case the rest of the interwebs didn’t know already.
You know… I’m increasingly mystified why somebody doesn’t try kicking off the summer festival circuit with a spring break show in Casa Grande or that Schnepf’s “Farm” thingy. Great weather, big college town…
Of course, what we’d get is that lineup above plus Nickelback and 311, so maybe, never mind…
@Barry White Stripes, Office LW: @SAShepherd: Hey, if you guys want to meet up before Katy Perry’s set, I’ll buy the first round of $9 beers.
Time to move Dan? I’m sure you have plenty of good things to say about Phoenix, I just never seem to see them…
If Casa Grande is good enough for the Jonas Brothers to play, it’s good enough for anyone.
@Psicosis: I actually have a great deal of what I feel is realistic affection for Phoenix. Pane Bianco, for example, is the best sandwich place in America. The number of quality affordable Asian restaurants by my house is astounding. The Loveblisters are as good as a local band can be.
That being said, the trickling stream of music venues closing with few popping up to replace them, the general state of the media here (including the miserable array of radio stations, Johnjay and Rich’s station, 104.7FM included) and the general sort of backwards thinking that permeates much of the political decision-making around these parts (hey, let’s not run the light rail when the bars are closing!) can be a bit troubling.
As a sometimes Phoenix resident myself, I’ll have to back up Dan on this one. Especially with regard to Pane Bianco, which makes any so-called panini you’ve eaten before seem like crap on crap crackers.
I live close to Pane Bianco, and find the hype a little too much, but it’s good stuf nonetheless. I’m more excited by the new branch of Cyclo that Justine swears will open up by December.
@Dan Gibson: Yeah, that’s it exactly, the first sentence anyway. I think that enough people (and I’m including me here) have finally figured out that they need to stop complaining about how great things are in other places and start working on making Phoenix great.
Or at least the next Pittsburgh.
@SAShepherd: Er, Justina.
