Upon hearing about Levi Stubbs’ passing, I couldn’t help but think of Billy Bragg’s story of a jackass husband and his suffering wife “Levi Stubbs’ Tears” and its recollection of the comfort of classic soul tracks in the midst of difficult times. I’m not sure if Levi was a fan of Billy’s, but the Bragg track is the best reminder of the evocative nature of Stubbs’ singing outside of the Four Tops’ catalog itself. [YouTube]

This is exactly the song that leapt to my mind when I saw the headline today. Now I have “Reach Out” stuck (happily) in my head, but the Bragg song popped in first.
Not sure if Levi was a fan, but the Tops were aware of the song – the lyrics to Levi Stubbs’ Tears are printed in on the first (or last – can’t remember) page of the book that accompanies the 2001 box set “Fourever.”
