Last night, the Backstreet Boys sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” before Game 1 of the World Series at Tropicana Field, and… they weren’t bad! No, really! They gave the United States’ national anthem a sweet street-corner spin, and their harmonies were sweet enough to make up for the lack of Max Martin production flourishes. Kind of sad that only Nick Carter rated getting his full name read out by the announcer, especially with the way Brian Littrell busted out that bit about gallant streams. [YouTube]

@Maura Johnston: It is one of the best songs EVER.
@Lucas Jensen: I was never a fan, besides above mentioned song….but Kevin was totally always the best one. Someone needs to start a petition.
@Maura Johnston: I also am coming to see that the best defense of a song’s awesomeness is showing someone enjoying the hell out it. Well done!!
(And the reverse can also be true…)
@Maura Johnston:
You’re telling me you didn’t already own a copy of Millenium? Tsk, tsk, tsk.
I should also point out that this pushed me to download “I Want It That Way.” What a rad song.
The Rays are doomed if that’s the best they could do. Hopefully, Philly will counter this by reuniting Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince to do “Al Qaeda Just Don’t Understand aka The Star Spangled Banner”.
I thought they sounded pretty good, though they are missing the rugged charm of Kevin Richardson.
I’m going to go kill myself now for saying that.
They sounded great. But not as good as NSYNC at the Olympics.
Backstreet Boys.[Pre- Kevin Richardson's departure] South Korea. Sold-Out arena. January 2006. Still one of the best concerts I ever attended. Yeah I said it.
to maura - the bsb love that video, they think it’s a hoot!
to lucas - i couldn’t agree more..they are missing kevin in the harmonys. i wish he was back with the group, even tho he’s not my fave.
to phaballa - there is absolutely no way, that nstink.. ehm..nsync is any better than bsb. they are the wanna be band, coming in second from the beginning.
now, as far as the announcers announcement of nicks full name and their performance… nick carter is a NATIVE of tampa (where the ball game was played), aj and howie are from orlando, and brian is from kentucky. for cryin out loud, don’t you people KNOW your bsb facts? and there was absolutely NO NEED for brian to grandstand that song. he was trying to be like an r&b star who goes all over the note map when he doesn’t need to. i thought he was most definately in the wrong for doin that. their voices blend quite nicely without all the baloney like brian pulled.
