@I'm Crushing Your Head: I'm not 100% sure this is correct, but if I recall, its on a Tuesday because, when the US was primarily an agrarian society, that's when most farmers would "go to market" and thus already be in town to vote. I agree that it should be on the weekend, but doubt that Sunday would ever get approved because that's the Sabbath for so many religions. And Saturday's the Sabbath for most of the others. I think a two-day, weekend-long election is probably the best compromise, and could actually see that happening soon, as long as it would not require a Constitutional Amendment (I can't remember), in which case all bets are off.

I wish Election Day were on a Sunday, when a lot of people either have off or are able to get off work during voting hours. Maybe my mind has become fried since high school (and I'm not even a pothead), but whose idea was it to put it on a Tuesday? That just seems random.

@Ned Raggett: Actually, I'm pretty sure that Federal law requires that your employer give you time off to vote. Well not technically "time off" per se, but must allow you to show up late or leave early (without punishment) to get to the polls.

Nope, I can use vacation time if I want. I'm going to see if I can get to the polls before work, since they open at 6 'round here, and I'm busy on Tuesdays after work.

I don't know anybody who gets it off, not without using their personal time. Is the music industry that out of touch? I shouldn't be surprised, I guess.
