Daryl Hall was originally slated to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Game 5 of the World Series last night, but a bout with the flu resulted in the other half of Hall & Oates stepping up to the mic and ably filling in. Surely I’m not the only one who thinks the outsized bombast that accompanied Oates’ performance was a sign that Philadelphia was really planning on sewing everything up last night, before the rains came and blew the last 2 1/2 innings of the game away. (Wait–does this mean that Oates is going to reprise his performance whenever the game eventually starts up again?) [YouTube]

@Thierry: Hey, let Oates have his time to shine. Certainly the Phunk Shui album didn’t allow him such a moment of glory.
Granted everyone knows that’s a hard song to sing. I think he did a solid job. Go ahead Oates!
I’ll say it again - someone get Todd Rundgren on the phone now!
He fucked up the lyrics.
@juiceandgin: I hardly think changing up two or three words qualifies as “fucked up the lyrics.”
I was really hoping we’d see Teddy Pendergrass sing the anthem for his hometown team.
