I read an interview with the Lips' manager a couple of years ago where he stated that Warner Brothers has made a profit on every single thing the Lips have ever put out, even the Zaireeka experiment. That's why Warners had no problem bankrolling the Christmas on Mars film.

The Lips are one of the most self-sufficient bands on the WB roster, and Wayne, Michael and Steven have perfected their practice of being an inexpensive band -- they don't blow their advances and even if a record only sells modestly, everyone comes out with more.
[blog.newsok.com]

WB has been very good to the Lips. Remember that Zaireeka came out *before* The Soft Bulletin. It was amazing that WB did that for the band during that drought between "She Don't Use Jelly" and The Soft Bulletin. The band's first WB album came out in 1992. That's a long, great relationship. Whether or not the actual deal is great is unknown. But the relationship is definitely great.

It's really refreshing to hear a band that's benefitted from a long relationship with a major label not sound totally bitter and eager to jump ship, even if they probably would be wise to jump ship.

@Lucas Jensen: Is that an "I bet" or "I know"?

I don't think I've heard that type of statement outside of a Merge artist for 12 years.

They have probably the greatest record deal in label history.
