Although Jess stole my “tell me what I should be listening to” concept a few weeks ago, I’m going to reclaim it today after realizing that I’ve essentially been listening to one album (Year of the Gentleman) and one song (Empire of the Sun’s “Walking On A Dream”, above), and not much else, this month. I’m not sure I’ve missed too much in October, but here’s your chance to promote whatever you’re excited about. If you don’t have anything, maybe Empire of the Sun will work for you too. I’ve mainly been listening to PJ Harvey and Fiona Apple. But I’ve also been liking The School (very Camera Obscura-ish, but Welsh, which means I guess you’d hate them) and the new Francoiz Breut songs that are circulating. And Euros Childs, but he’s Welsh too, so never mind.
when is Empire of the Sun dropping a disc? it’s impossible to find a physical copy online to buy.

Is it so bad that I’ve spent most of this week listening to Rhino’s Golden Throats series? Unfortunately, only a few are still in print, and I’ve been following it up with The Rapture’s K7!Tapes mix, which is oh so groovy. And I just snagged the Earles & Jensen double-cd for $5 via the temporarily remodeled Matablog, which is probably the only Halloween sale I will be partaking in today (the cheap candy isn’t marked down until tomorrow, so…).
the new monsters are waiting ep ones and zeroes is getting lots of play here and, much like iantenna, i’m loving department of eagles in ear park.
and much like CloudCarrier, The Rapture’s K7!Tapes has stayed in my car’s CD player for a week now with no chance of being removed. Hey, they drop The Bar-Kays AND Cajmere on the same mix.
Julie Ocean, Dungen and Juana Molina all put out good albums pretty recently. I guess the Julie Ocean one isn’t that new.
The latest Randy Newman album is still in heavy rotation in my player, and is one of his very best. I’ve also been revisiting the Ultramagnetic MC’s, and Richie Havens’ The Great Blind Degree, which unfortunately has never been released on cd (it came out the same year as Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On and, for my money, is almost its equal).
The Knux – Remind Me in 3 Days [So Cal hip-hopping duo by way of Louisiana. Gives me a strong Stankonia vibe]
Deerhunter – Microcastle [Never paid attention to Deerhunter until now. Very haunting and soulful disc]
Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago [A good one to just put on and just coast. Very hypnotizing]
Of Montreal – Skeletal Lamping [Started out as a chaotic mess for me (Boy did it take me a minute to warm to Track One) But give it some time and a minute or two and the disc just shines, shines, shines. All over the place/over the top and chaotic, but in a sexy, groovetastic self-confident kind of way.]
Mariah Carey – E=MC2 (Select tracks) [What?]
Never heard of Empire of the Sun. That song is pretty cool. I don’t mind the MGMT likeness, mostly because they are not MGMT.
The Very Best Mixtape – [www.myspace.com]
What Does It All Mean? by Steinski – especially the first five tracks on disc 1 and all of the amazing “Nothing To Fear” mix on disc 2.
Beauties Never Die by the awkwardly-named but fantastic Sissy Wish (from Bergen, Norway). So good I bought it twice, once on iTunes (when I couldn’t get a physical copy) and again when the CD was finally released in the US.
And, speaking of double albums, A Love Extreme by Benji Hughes actually has enough great tracks to warrant two discs.
@D.R. Mosby: even though its a retrospective, that Steinski record is in my best of 2008 contention. incredible.
Wow, thanks for the heads-up on EotS — visually they’re MGMT crossed with FischerSpooner, and yet I don’t feel the desire to punch them. The song’s pretty awesome.
I had no idea the guy from the Sleepy Jackson had a new project. Awesome.
@lindseykai: Apparently his involvement is some sort of poorly kept secret.
Single: T-Pain, “Ringleader Man”, albums: Ladyhawke – Ladyhawke and TV On The Radio – Dear Science. Disco jam: Friendly Fires – “Paris (Aeroplane Remix)” f/ Au Revoir Simone.
Woah, I clearly need more Australian music in my life.
