Sly Stone’s Comeback Trail Is Still Pretty Bumpy

When a proper explanation of a concert requires a review and a behind-the-scenes breakdown of what happened, you’re looking at something special. Whether the word “special” has good or bad connotations depends on the circumstances of the show, and unfortunately for people who paid to see Sly Stone play in Santa Rosa, Calif., on Oct. 18, the concert they attended was nothing short of chaotic. Stone fired his business manager that morning; demanded that he be wired $3,000 before even getting on a plane from Los Angeles to San Francisco; and showed up late for the show, which ended with Stone telling the audience “I gotta go take a piss. I’ll be right back,” then leaving his band to vamp for the next 30 minutes while he argued with the venue’s manager over money. Then he took off without paying the musicians. There’s much, much more at the link, but be forewarned: It’s pretty depressing. [City Sound Inertia via The Velvet Rope]
