Barack Obama’s Inauguration To Double As Bruce Springsteen’s Album Release Party?

November 6th, 2008 // 7 Comments

The Bruce Springsteen fansite Backstreets.com is claiming that the Boss, who debuted a new song at a Barack Obama rally in Cleveland over the weekend, has been working on a new album all this time. The expected release date? “Around the time of the Presidential Inauguration in January 2009.” Oh man, this is going to make the crowd at the inauguration even more ridiculous, isn’t it. Clip of Springsteen debuting the new track–titled “Workin’ On A Dream”–after the jump.

A CNN premiere! Everyone’s getting into the bypassing-MTV act these days.

Anything that keeps him from making an appearance as an AMERICAN IDOL “mentor” next season is fine by me.

Here’s to hoping that the new record isn’t produced by Brendan O’Brien. And that Bruce continues to cultivate his Jayson Werth-y flavor saver.

@goldsounds: AMEN on O’Brien. He is the Michael Bay of music.

Let’s also hope he fixes whatever made Magic sound (sonically) shitty. If that’s O’Brien’s fault, then yeah, one more reason for tossing him over the side.

@Lucas Jensen: This kick drum isn’t loud enough. Lets make it sound AWESOME! BOOM! Awesome!

Those guitars don’t sound AWESOME enough yet. Lets add some compression. AWESOME!

Apparently there was a significant amount of material recorded during the Magic sessions that didn’t make it onto that album, so it’s quite likely that some of those songs will end up on the new one. (So at least part of the new album is bound to sound like crud.) In concert, the songs from Magic really came to life, so I put the blame for Magic on Brendan O’Brien’s rotten production – the guitars are so flattened out you can barely make out the chord changes.

@D.R. Mosby: Here here. Those songs sounded top-notch in the live setting–which is a good thing, as Bruce and the band played about 10 songs from Magic when I saw them last fall. On record . . . flat as fuck. O’Brien did make some good records 10-15 years ago–a few Pearl Jam ones, Michael Penn’s Resigned–so it’s possible he just doesn’t know how to handle such a large band (physically and sonically). It just ended up sounding small.
