Beleaguered electronics retailer Circuit City has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, just one week after announcing that it would close 20% of its stores and lay off thousands of employees. The retailer claims that it’ll stay open through the holiday season, although I suspect six weeks must seem like an awful long time to the company’s suits. [AP]

@Dickdogfood: They are liquidating the inventory of closed stores. I wouldn’t count on many good deals, though. In these situations, the liquidator usually sticks 30 to 40 percent off signs on anything, and hopes that the merchandise gets sold on the hype of people coming in expecting a good deal. The reality will probably be that you can find most of the stuff cheaper on the internet.
Anyone who attempted to get a good deal at a closing CompUSA last year will vouch for this. I kept waiting for a Mac Mini to get slashed to a good value, only to see it remain $30 more than Amazon’s price at the final markdown.
You might get a decent deal on some CDs or DVDs that are older or can’t be returned (think big releases from 2002 or 2003). That’s the cheapest stuff you could get when Tower went out.
