Personally, I think Lacuna Coil has it all over both Evanescence or Paramore. Tell me "Our Truth" -- which was used in Underworld -- wouldn't work better as an anthem for Twilight. (Ok, I admit, I've read the books...)

Great piece, but I'm kind of terrified of Paramore becoming Evanescence. Remember that Ben Moody left the band shortly after "Bring Me To Life" became a hit, and Lee has taken an Axl Rose-esque grip on the band (every original member of the band is gone, complaining about Lee all the way home). To top it off, The Open Door was nowhere near the hit Fallen was. I'd hate to see Paramore end up walking this same road (for reasons beyond my undying love for Hayley Williams).

And re: the bit about Rihanna. You mean the gargantuan All The Right Reasons didn't score that many hits? Hmmph.

Throughout their last two records, O.A.R. have completely alienated the fans that liked them in the first place with hits like "Shattered" and the equally airplay-successful (but noncharting) "Love and Memories". The thing is, they don't sound too different from the band that won the hearts of jamheads like myself with songs like "That Was A Crazy Game of Poker".

@tim_loves_cats: I've always called Paramore a slightly less manufactured version of Avril, honestly. (And I didn't really make the Evanescence connection until this post.)

Also, even with so many singles off of Good Girl Gone Bad, thus far, "Breakin' Dishes" has yet to be one of them. So I wouldn't mind seeing 9 singles off of one (and a half?) album(s).

There never has been or ever will be anything remotely punk about Paramore.

Excellent as always, Chris.

* I'm so glad you made the Evanescence / Paramore connection. To my friends who are not as pop-ified as I am, I've been describing Paramore as "think Evanescence, only less gothy and more punk". I guess I'll have to refine my description a bit.

* I sorta agree with your point about about Rihanna / "eight hits from 'one' album", but then again I also sorta don't. I could write at length -- and maybe I'll drop you a line later -- about Rihanna, how her whole 3-year (!) career has been virtually one long line of hit singles, what's "an album" anymore, and so on, but isn't this really just one more example of how shoe-horning an example of "the new model" into the framework of "the old model" just doesn't quite work?

In any event, I've always loved Ri's "Rehab", even though the JT/Timba collabo sounds like just-about every third-or-so track from "Justified" or "FutureSex/LoveSounds". It's a formula that works, obvs.

Interesting stuff, kinda ties into one of my posts from over the summer:
[idolator.com]

It's worth noting that the last Riot! single, "That's What You Get, actually did better on the Pop 100 than the Modern Rock chart (which was not at all the case for the 2 bigger hits off that album). I really thought the band wasn't gonna go for the brass ring of pop radio crossover when they neglected to release "We Are Broken" or "When it Rains" as singles, though. I don't know if "Decode" is going to end up being their big "Don't Speak" crossover moment, though, doesn't feel like a very big song, but I'm curious what sound they go for with their next album.
