The Fray (those “How To Save a Life” dudes) are conducting the latest experiment in digital-age promo stunts by striking a sort of junket deal with ABC. The network will debut the band’s new single as the soundtrack to a promo for the new season of Lost, and the band will appear on three ABC shows, including this Sunday’s American Music Awards (sorry guys!). Once the promo premieres, the song will be for sale on iTunes and you can see a longer version of the commercial? Which people might want to do? Pop music is now being treated just any other product placement, I guess: get a glimpse of the product showcased at its most awesome (e.g. associated with Lost), then go to the Web site and buy it. I would never in a million years intentionally buy something by the Fray, but I would buy a chance to see footage from Lost two months early, so I guess this is good marketing.
