“Pete & Pete” & Stephin & Sarah & David & Debbie & Gordon &…

From the “someone hasn’t done this already?” file: Here’s a clip consisting solely of “bizarre indie cameos” from the old Nickelodeon show The Adventures Of Pete & Pete. The creator has posted a list of the cameos on his blog, but surely all of you smartypantses out there can name every special guest in the montage on first sight? [YouTube via The Clog]

Clearly the finest television show ever created.

I really wish Nickelodeon would release this on DVD. This was the best children’s TV show ever made and could’ve easily worked as a primetime network show (or maybe on MTV. It was far too hip for network TV in the early 90’s).

No other show weirds me out and breaks my heart like this one. Iggy Pop as Nona’s dad just cements it.

@DocStrange: First two seasons + specials are out. They had a box in circulation for season 3 (winter theme) but it disappeared from amazon.

Does anyone remember the episode where big Pete calls out the lifeguard for a being a pool urinator? Classic.

Ann Magnuson. We all need more Ann Magnuson in our lives.

Somehow Michael Stipe got left out of the montage. Weird considering he’s pretty much the music inspiration for everything on that show.

This show was the Twin Peaks for the Nickelodeon set. I tried explaining it to my boyfriend one night and he just thought I was drunk.

@DumpDolan: “(Michael Stipe’s part got cut to .5 seconds to make the clip under 10 minutes. Sorry Mike, everybody hurts.)”

I went to college with little pete. I once saw him drunkenly stumble into a stream.

Oh how I love that one of the tags is Velocity Girl! They were always one of my favorites and Sarah was adorable in that episode.
For some reason I am most surprised about Martin Donovan. I would never have recognized him either if I saw that episode again.

No LL Cool J or Adam West?

My kids were pre-teens during Pete&Pete’s heyday, and they both developed a lifelong obsession with that show. I watched it with them religiously, and made them listen to the Stooges, Bongwater, REM, Syd Straw, etc to place the cameos in their proper context.

I was rewarded years later when my son’s band Melba (named after another character from a Nickelodeon show) covered the Pete & Pete theme song, “Hey Sandy”

The site [pnp.norecess.org] goes into obessive detail about the show, the episodes, the guests, etc, etc.

And as it turns out you can watch my favorite episode “Hard Day’s Pete”

In which young Pete performs his elusive favorite song with Miracle Legion.

Having Luscious Jackson play your school dance is pretty nifty.

And the eternal question…was it really THE Hunter Thompson on the show?
