MySpace’s Branding Ineptitude Results In Another Casualty

Tucson electropoppers …Music Video? recently had their MySpace URL recalled by the service–not because it was overly raunchy, but because the site wanted it for itself. See, when the band snagged myspace.com/musicvideo the site didn’t foresee a future in which it would want that bit of easy branding for its own music-video ventures–but it came to that realization recently, and as a result “requested” that the band go hunting for a new shortened link to its music. Of course, the allegedly music-forward MySpace didn’t take into consideration that its URLs are a crucial part of many bands’ marketing strategies, and that this land grab would result in the URL that …Music Video? had been giving out to fans and members of the press (including NPR) redirecting to MySpace’s own video hub. (Which, it should be noted, has a “sexy bikini hottie” as its main attraction.) You’d think that MySpace’s pitch to be the ultimate site for music info on the web wouldn’t result in flare-ups like this one, but given MySpace Music’s clumsy launch and overall crappiness, I guess we shouldn’t be too surprised. @sicksteanein: Subdomains are tied to directories, I think. A better avenue would’ve been to just procure a whole new domain, which I’m sure they’d have no problem affording: myspacemusic.com/video or something similar. But I guess you don’t get to the top by doing things the easy or sensible way.

@brasstax: Subdomains can point at any subdirectory. Sounds like MySpace IT is just lazy here.

i just want to make a later post that wouldn’t be 41-deep in the comments about the Gaslight Anthem. fact is, pitchfork is consistently about one to two years behind what is “cutting edge” in punk. my friends and i have seen gaslight at least four times. they’re good. they’re not 8.7 good or whatever the rating was. i pretty much gave up entirely on considering pitchfork a remotely viable source of legitimacy with respect to punk music reviews when they decided back in the day that Mastodon released one of the best albums of the year. That shit was laughable.

@doublewhiskycokenoice: Mastodon did release one of the best albums of the year (2004 or 2006, take your pick). Are you still caught up in that high school punk vs. metal division?

BACK ON TOPIC: I really hate the term “sexy bikini hottie”.

why can’t myspace just use musicvideo.myspace.com? That seems more official anyways.
