I'm no Britney fan either, but that was a fantastic article, and what I saw of the documentary seemed pretty reasonable too.

It was a surprisingly good documentary. She came across very well. And the best thing was she wasn't asking for sympathy. Your critique of the Madonna moment(and how she is) is spot on.

@ObtuseIntolerant: I'm not a huge Britney fan. I don't have any of her albums. The lady's got some tunes, though, and for the 5 years between '98 and '03, her record was just about perfect. Watch the Toxic video, she was on point. That said, Rich Juzwiak was on the money when he wrote, "Spears is one of the few people allowed a public platform for whom playing the puppet is a wise move."

Somewhere along the way I missed why Britney is relevant and likable beyond physical attractiveness. What backs it up? I am being honestly curious more than snarky, if someone can explain it better to me.

She seems to have been a very good dancer at one point. But I am not convinced of her vocal or songwriting contributions beyond that - and I like plenty of acts with heavy producer input. It just seems amply clear that she is not in control of ANY facet of this career of hers. I just find that rather hard to accept and respect.

Is she a metaphor for our country in her era of popularity or something? Is that why she matters and people are giving her a constant break? I wasn't buying it then, and I'm not buying it now.

I don't see how a Dolly Parton comparison can stand at all beyond the fact that they are booby blondes. Dolly is in complete command and has total perspective. Britney seems like nothing but a pawn.

That "Karate Kid" line at the end was was really, really creepy. But not nearly as creepy as Madonna's face. Jocelyn Wildenstein called, and she wants her cheek implants back. I mean DAMN. I found Maddy's mug far sadder than Britney's life.

Pardon me, but Dolly isn't "kind of" a genius, she is simply a genius.
