Britney Spears Fashions Her Own Spectacle

Was it a conscious decision to make “Circus,” the title track from Britney Spears’ new album, eerily recall “Gimme More” from her blackout-period opus Blackout? Either way, the song’s video has enough meta to choke even the most semiotics-loving grad student. There’s the “Britney leading a dance troupe down a hall” bit that recalls “…Baby One More Time”; a glittery nude bodysuit not unlike the one she stripped down to during the 2000 Video Music Awards; a shot of her self-branded perfume. Not to mention that the elephant’s trunk reminds me of that snake from the next year’s VMAs. (I guess she has enough metaphoric snakes plaguing her past few years for that little allusion to be left as not-so-literal.) [YouTube via stopwhispering]

um…no. Gimme More? Baby One More Time? A VMA performance?

This video actually recalls the Slave 4 U video, specifically the “dark hallway with shards of light shining through from slats in each side” thing. Also, they have the same director.

I really don’t see any other references at all, except for I guess it has lots of animals, like the VMA performance. Oh, and she’s dancing and looking at the camera, which is also like her other videos.

@chachwitablog: i guess everyone sees their own reference points in britney. it’s why she’s such an icon, no?

please do an analysis on the new girls aloud video “the loving kind”.

as for britney, like the womanizer video, she is not hitting her dance marks. the spark is still gone. she needs to go back to kentwood and leave this shit behind until she really wants it which very well may be never.

@bess marvin, girl detective: Aloud sings in little boxes. The end.

Yeah, each new wrinkle in the Britney’s Circus era leaves me colder and colder. This vid is verrrrrrrrry uninspiring, and she is DEFINITELY not up to par with the dancing.

And the Rockefeller tree-lighting intro? What is she now, a spokesmodel?

Everything is coming up solid B-. I’ll wait for her the next album, hopefully some fresh B&A tracks and some inspired new videos–by NEW directors, not the same old same old–REALLY put her back where she belongs.

Poor Britney. I can’t decide which is worse for her- having everyone speculate about coded messages in everything she does, or outsourcing everything so that it’s more than possible that the coded messages really are there.
