Natalie Maines Sued, Toby Keith Buys Everyone A Round

The section “Public statements and controversy” in the Wikipedia article about Natalie Maines just got a little bit longer, thanks to Terry Hobbs, the stepfather of one the children killed in the 1993 West Memphis Three incident, suing Maines for defamation. Hobbs took exception to the implication—made by Maines in a post to the Dixie Chicks’ Web site—that he might be the true killer of Steve Branch, Christopher Byers, and Michael Moore and not the currently imprisoned Damien Echols, Jesse Misskelley, and Jason Baldwin. I’m no legal expert, but it’s hard to see where Hobbs has much of a chance suing Maines over opinions she seemingly assembled from other sources. However, if Hobbs is successful, that probably opens the door a bit for the Howard Stern show’s Eric the Midget, who accuses Maines of ruining his sex life. That woman is just the center of constant controversy. [CMT]
