Is Nothing Sacred? Dept.

Internet sensations Tokio Hotel may be lipsyncing and miming their instruments in concert. You have to admire the attention to detail, though, since every time I’ve heard them perform, the whole package—from Bill Kaulitz’s tortured-mangachild vocals on down—sounds pretty crappy! [Perez Hilton]

This band looks like they walked out of a Square-Enix game.

  2. revmatty  |   Posted on Dec 9th, 2008

So they’re actually a real band, not some pr campaign for Mentos or something?

  3. Maura Johnston  |   Posted on Dec 9th, 2008

@revmatty: hahahahahahhaahahaha omg the idea of them as ‘freshmakers’ has made a very shitty day a bit brighter

So….is that what that middle-aged guy sitting just offstage with a Powerbook was doing, then? I suspected as much. Off to comfort my sister, whilst snickering.

@Maura Johnston: Cosign, I can just see them striking that pose at the end of each commercial.

@ObtuseIntolerant: Wait, what? Storytime! Did he just sit there glumly?

@Ned Raggett: Well, is that actually abnormal?

See…I go to lots of different shows, but I don’t know anything about tech and also don’t usually get to be so close to the stage when I go to shows…but I accompanied my sis to a Tokio Hotel show in October in Philly, at the Electric Factory. It’s not a humongous venue, and there weren’t tons of over-21s, obviously, so we were able to go upstairs to the bar area and overlook the stage from the wings, pretty much right on top of the band.

One of the first things I noticed was the guy sitting on the stage on his laptop open, like he made himself a little cubicle…I’m not sure if he was visible to the main audience. I figured he was doing something legitimate because if not, wouldn’t they have tried to hide him better? He was like your normal 40-something looking, dorkily hippish guy. He was just chillin’, looking like he was at the office, doing his thing. He wasn’t doing anything that appeared interesting, so I forgot about him after a bit. Is that…weird?

To be fair, the only un-live thing I noticed was the echo on Bill Kaulitz’ voice but I figured they were just goin’ for tortured and ethereal. I wasn’t paying attention to minute details. They were cute enough…?

in this jaded cynical world, I’ll only believe it if its on youtube.

  9. @ObtuseIntolerant

I always thought that cubicle was pretty standard. They’re everwhere today. I even saw one for the Gather Homecoming, a few months ago.

I dunno how true this is or not, but I heard playback performances for Radio stations in Europe are common. They’re making a big jump from non English speaking Europe to the US. Give them some credit.
