The Loveblisters Prove That Not All Arizona Music Is Directly Influenced By The Gin Blossoms

December 12th, 2008 // 13 Comments

As someone with two children, I don’t spend every night combing local clubs for the hottest rising talent these days, but every single time I’ve seen The Loveblisters perform they’ve turned out out one quality pop song after another. Given that there is no justice in this world—particularly the sort meted out by A&R types visiting the greater Phoenix area—I’ve watched act after act get record deals while the Loveblisters’ second album, The Nowhere West, sat on the shelf. (The fact that most of said deals will likely collapse upon themselves is cold comfort.) Well, it’s available now for free (just like that Nine Inch Nails band!), so if you would like to tell people you know a great band in Phoenix, figure out the strange and befuddling download process at the site and enjoy. I hope that title wasn’t a dig against the Gin Blossoms. Don’t you dare tread on my favorite post-grunge purveyors of jangle-pop.

  2. Dan Gibson

@Halfwit: I like the Gin Blossoms a fair amount (especially the Hopkins stuff). I guess being off the beaten path, people look for an easy reference to all a state’s music, and frequently it seems to be the Gin Blossoms here.

Yeah, so I’m still trying to figure out the strange and befuddling download process… I love the Loveblisters.

  4. Dan Gibson

@so1omon: It took awhile, but inside the obnoxious music player, there’s a download link for each song (except the last track, for some reason).

  5. Jnizzle

My favorite band of all time!!! And always will be :)

Hahaha… did you know its 2008? As a music writer, dont you owe it to your constituency to familiarize yourself with, well, music??

No dissing on the Loveblisters OR Gin Blossoms as they are both great; but the music in Phoenix is SO much more than this lame, perpetuated stereotype.. and it keeps getting better everyday. Check it out.

Completely on the mark. It seems like the vast majority of Arizona bands are trying to be either Gin Blossoms or Clarity-era Jimmy Eat World.

I graduated from ASU in the spring but got pretty into some rad local music. Dan, if you’re ever hard up for something to do, here are some of my favorites to see:

    - What Laura Says
    - The Via Maris
    - Source Victoria
    - Peachcake (seriously)

@dmoroney:Not to be a jackass, but I listen to far more music on a daily basis that you could possibly imagine, but besides that, I don’t write for any local publications, so to be frank, the music of this area isn’t generally my concern. I obviously try to hear as much as I can including the music immediately surrounding me, but my life isn’t really spent at the Last Exit night after night these days. I wasn’t meaning to imply that all the music here sounds like the Gin Blossoms, but that the general perception of the scene here is that it does. Get it?

@G3K: I have actually heard all those acts at one point or another. I personally can’t stand Peachcake, but Via Maris are quite good. Thanks for the links though. I am always up for suggestions.

Yes that is the perception. And as a valley musician, i personally think it sucks when critics such as yourself perpetuate that perception instead of investigating further. Its laziness if you ask me.

I get it, you like the Loveblisters, so why dont you write about them and leave the rest of us out of it.

And i most likely listen to just as much music on a daily basis as you, along with making music, AND going out to see live music here in the valley.. Get it??

  10. Dan Gibson

@dmoroney: You’re adorable. You took a joke in the title of a post and turned it into an imaginary argument! I wasn’t trying to get into a pissing match with you over who listens to more music, just point out that I spend quite a bit of time “familiarizing myself with music” as you put it.

Believe it or not, I actually enjoy a number of Phoenix area acts (and as a bonus, a few Tucson ones), but I happened to mention the Loveblisters today because…wait for it…they have a new album out. I’m sorry that bugged you somehow.

Im really not arguing or in a piss competition. A friend of mine posted this on Facebook and it really just struck a nerve in me. That nerve is reserved for uncreative journalists who have no one to answer to for the things they say… though this is only the first thing ive read of yours, so that comment isnt aimed directly at you.

No need to apologize, i just wouldve liked to hear more about the record..

  12. Dan Gibson

@dmoroney: We’re not really a review site, although I suppose being new here there’s no reason for you to know that. Plus, you can download it for free. In these cases, I’d rather people just form their own opinion.
